The purpose of this study was to present improvement of science and engineering literacy education concern with 'fundamental engineering literacy'. This study was conducted through literature review and research on the actual condition of fundamental career ability of science and engineering college students. Based on the research results, engineering literacy (communication, personal relationship, career ethics, self-improvement and self-administer) subjects (cultural scientific understanding of engineering, social scientific understanding of engineering, engineering and communication, engineering and personal relationship) and managerial devices were provided. The proposal to improve engineering literacy education are as following : First, make clear the concepts of engineering literacy and subject for engineering literacy education. Second, support curriculum, teaching method and assessment in related to engineering literacy. Third, support training course for professional who will be in charge of engineering literacy education.

<P>Alzheimer's disease (AD), a major neurodegenerative disorder, is associated with the enzymatic reaction of beta-secretase (BACE1) on the amyloid precursor protein (APP) for the generation of neurotoxic amyloid-beta (A beta). Therefore, A beta accumulation and oxidative stress-induced neuronal cell death are the pathogenic hallmarks of AD. In this study, we tried to identify BACE1 inhibitors and neuroprotectants from natural products, in particular, from the Korean mushroom Polyozellus multiplex. Four p-terphenyls were identified from the ethanolic extract of P. multiplex; polyozellin (1), thelephoric acid (2), polyozellic acid (3), and kynapcin-12 (4). Compounds 1-4 effectively inhibited BACE1 activity with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 3.08, 3.50, 4.78, and 15.79 mu M, respectively. Compounds 1-3 reduced the production of neurotoxic A beta(1-42) production in APPswe-N2a cells in a concentration-dependent manner. When HT22 cells were stressed with 5 mM glutamate, compounds 2 and 3 significantly recovered cell viability. It was correlated with their inhibitory properties against glutamate-mediated Ca2+ influx, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, lipid peroxidation, reduction in Bcl-2 and Bid levels, and enhanced phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Thus, P. multiplex and the isolated p-terphenyls might be useful in the development of lead compounds for the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, especially AD.</P>

The mulberry tree (Morus alba L.) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat inflammatory diseases. We investigated the effects of bioconversion on different components of the mulberry tree, and determined changes in the physiological activities. Ethyl acetate-soluble fractions of five different segments (fruit, Mori Fructus; leaf, Mori Folium; twig, Mori Ramulus; root, Mori Cortex; and mistletoe, Loranthi Ramulus) of the mulberry tree show enhanced anti-oxidant effects in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylvenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays, and enhanced anti-inflammatory effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 macrophages, after being treated with a crude enzyme extract from Aspergillus kawachii, in the following order of activity: Mori Folium>Mori Cortex>Mori Ramulus>Mori Fructus> Loranthi Ramulus. Ethyl acetate- soluble fraction of mulberry leaves (Mori Folium) that underwent bioconversion was most effective, and was devoid of any cytotoxicity. The fraction was also effective against mRNA expression of LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines, such as inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6. In addition, the fraction was effective in LPSinduced phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases and IKK, and IκB degradation, followed by translocation of the nuclear factor-κB from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. Thus, bioconversion increased the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of the mulberry leaf.

<P>We assessed the clinical feasibility of conducting immunoassays based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An autoantibody against citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) was used as a biomarker, magnetic beads conjugated with CCP were used as substrates, and the SERS nanotags were comprised of anti-human IgG-conjugated hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs). We were able to determine the anti-CCP serum levels successfully by observing the distinctive Raman intensities corresponding to the SERS nanotags. At high concentrations of anti-CCP (>25??U/mL), the results obtained from the SERS assay confirmed those obtained via an ELISA-based assay. Nevertheless, quantitation via our SERS-based assay is significantly more accurate at low concentrations (<25??U/mL). In this study, we compared the results of an anti-CCP assay of 74 clinical blood samples obtained from the SERS-based assay to that of a commercial ELISA kit. The results of the anti-CCP-positive group (n???=???31, >25??U/mL) revealed a good correlation between the ELISA and SERS-based assays. However, in the anti-CCP-negative group (n???=???43, <25??U/mL), the SERS-based assay was shown to be more reproducible. Accordingly, we suggest that SERS-based assays are novel and potentially useful tools in the early diagnosis of RA.</P>

<P>The aim of the study was to assess the association between usual dietary nutrient intake and obesity in Korean type 2 diabetic patients. We examined 2,832 type 2 diabetic patients from the Korean National Diabetes Program cohort who completed dietary assessment and clinical evaluation in this cross-sectional study. In men, higher dietary fiber intake was associated with a lower odds of being obese (<I>P<SUB>trend</SUB></I> = 0.003) and in women, higher protein intake was associated with a lower odds of being obese (<I>P<SUB>trend</SUB></I> = 0.03) after adjustment for age, diabetes duration, HbA1c, alcohol drinking, income, education level, and calorie intake. In men, higher fiber intake was associated with lower odds of obesity after further adjustment for diastolic blood pressure, physical activity, and possible confounding nutritional intake and medication. The multivariable adjusted odds ratio for the highest quintile of fiber intake was 0.37 (<I>P<SUB>trend</SUB></I> < 0.001). In women, protein intake was not associated with obesity after further adjustment. In conclusion, higher intake of dietary fiber is associated with lower odds of being obese in type 2 diabetic men, suggesting a role for dietary fiber in the management and prevention of obesity in type 2 diabetes (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT 01212198).</P>

This study showed that horticultural therapy could impact patients` emotions through changes in three-finger-tip holding. All of these results indicated that horticultural therapy could be employed as a method of socio-environmental therapy for patients at long-term sanitariums who suffered from dementia. It was difficult to generalize such results since the present experiment was conducted in a short period of time with a limited number of participants as control group and experimental group. However, considering that the elderly with dementia tend to stay at sanitariums for quite a long period of time, studies for developing a long-term program for performing horticultural therapy should be conducted more in the future.

Objectives : This study investigated the hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects of Curcuma radix using a rat model induced by poloxamer 407 injection. Methods : Serum lipid parameters and oxidative stress-associated biomarkers were determined. Additionally, hepatic cholesterol and triglyceride as well as lipid metabolism-associated gene expressions were observed in hepatic tissue. Results : 1. Curcuma radix ameliorated elevation of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, MDA, hepatic cholesterol level, and reduction of serum TAC, SOD, GSH, GSH-reductase level. 2. Curcuma radix augmented up-regulated ACAT gene expression. 3. Curcuma radix almost completely ameliorated down-regulated CYP-7A1 but up-regulated HMG-CoA gene expression. Conclusions : The hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties of Curcuma radix were evidenced. This study provides a scientific basis for the clinical application of Curcuma radix and development of hypolipidemics using this herb in the future.
