Prediction of fly ash concrete compressive strengths using soft computing techniques

The use of fly ash in modern-day concrete technology aiming sustainable constructions is on rapid rise. Fly ash, a spinoff from coal calcined thermal power plants with pozzolanic properties is used for cement replacement in concrete. Fly ash concrete is cost effective, which modifies and improves the fresh and hardened properties of concrete and additionally addresses the disposal and storage issues of fly ash. Soft computing techniques have gained attention in the civil engineering field which addresses the drawbacks of classical experimental and computational methods of determining the concrete compressive strength with varying percentages of fly ash. In this study, models based on soft computing techniques employed for the prediction of the compressive strengths of fly ash concrete are collected from literature. They are classified in a categorical way of concrete strengths such as control concrete, high strength concrete, high performance concrete, self-compacting concrete, and other concretes pertaining to the soft computing techniques usage. The performance of models in terms of statistical measures such as mean square error, root mean square error, coefficient of correlation, etc. has shown that soft computing techniques have potential applications for predicting the fly ash concrete compressive strengths.

This study presents a methodology of in- tegrating dielectrophoresis (DEP) and electrorotation (ROT) on to a planar open electrode system platform to combinatorially characterize and separate organic and inorganic micro particles separate We have optimized methods to develop “biochip” prototype device that is easy to fabricate with an electrode geometry that en- ables unique combination of programmed input electri- cal signals that induces DEP and ROT simultaneously for micro-particle separation. We have demonstrated the isolation of target organic/inorganic particles from a heterogeneous sample population using dynamic DEP and ROT induced electric fields. Target particles were effectively separated and simultaneously analyzed for its dielectric properties using dynamic electrode geo- metry. In this study we have successfully shown the separation of two study models with separation effi- ciency of > 96% from heterogeneous mixture of orga- nic (HeLa and HEK cells) and inorganic (polystyrene beads) particles as a proof-of-feasibility suitable for translation research.

Acid-Fastness of Histoplasma in Surgical Pathology Practice

Background: Histoplasmosis (HP) is diagnosed by visualizing intracellular microorganisms in biopsy and/or culture. Periodic-acid Schiff (PAS) and Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) staining methods are routinely used for identification. The acid-fast property of Histoplasma was identified decades ago, but acid-fast staining has not been practiced in current surgical pathology. Awareness of the acid-fast property of Histoplasma, which is due to mycolic acid in the cell wall, is important in distinguishing Histoplasma from other infective microorganisms. Here, we examined acid-fastness in previously diagnosed cases of Histoplasma using the Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) stain and correlated those findings with other known fungal stains. Methods: All cases diagnosed as HP were retrieved and reviewed along with ZN staining and other fungal stains. We also stained cases diagnosed with Cryptococcus and Leishmania as controls for comparison. Results: A total of 54 patients ranging in age from 11 to 69 years were examined. The most common sites of infection were the skin, adrenal tissue, and respiratory tract. Of the total 43 tissue samples, 20 (46.5%) stained positive with the ZN stain. In viable cases, a significant proportion of microorganisms were positive while necrotic cases showed only rare ZN-positive yeasts. In comparison to PAS and GMS stains, there was a low burden of ZN-positive yeasts. Cryptococcus showed characteristic ZN staining and all cases of Leishmania were negative. Conclusions: Although the morphology of fungal organisms is the foundation of identification, surgical pathologists should be aware of the acid-fast property of fungi, particularly when there is the potential for confusion with other infective organisms.

Fracture properties of concrete depend on the mix proportions of the ingredients, specimen shape and size, type of testing method used for the evaluation of fracture properties. Aggregates play a key role for changes in the fracture behaviour of concrete as they constitute about 60-75 % of the total volume of the concrete. The present study deals with the effect of size and quantity of coarse aggregate on the fracture behaviour of steel fibre reinforced self compacting concrete (SFRSCC). Lower coarse aggregate and higher fine aggregate content in SCC results in the stronger interfacial transition zone and a weaker stiffness of concrete compared to vibrated concrete. As the fracture properties depend on the aggregates quantity and size particularly in SCC, three nominal sizes (20 mm, 16 mm and 12.5 mm) and three coarse to fine aggregate proportions (50-50, 45-55, 40-60) were chosen as parameters. Wedge Split Test (WST), a stable test method was adopted to arrive the requisite properties. Specimens without and with guide notch were investigated. The results are indicative of increase in fracture energy with increase in coarse aggregate size and quantity. The splitting force was maximum for specimens with 12.5 mm size which is associated with a brittle failure in the pre-ultimate stage followed by a ductile failure due to the presence of steel fibres in the post-peak stage.

In this work, rGO-based ternary dual Z-scheme heterojunction (rGO/CuFe2O4/CdS/Bi2S3 QDs) was formulatedfor the effective photo-Fenton assisted photocatalytic degradation of a b-blocker, atenolol. The catalystwas synthesised via a simple co-precipitation/hydrothermal method and was characterized usingXRD, XPS, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, PL, EIS, ESR, Raman and DRS. It exhibited about 76.5% degradation of atenololin 360 min under visible light irradiation with a rate constant of 0.004 min1 wherein the mechanism ofenhanced activity was attributed to the formation of OH, h+ and photo-Fenton reaction; a possible mechanismwas drafted. The intermediates were determined using GC–MS analysis delineating a plausibledegradation pathway, the mineralization of atenolol being confirmed by TOC analysis. The catalyst wasreusable and highly stable up to six cycles of degradation, as affirmed via XRD and XPS analysis. Further, the toxicity of the catalyst has been studied using the root cells of Allium cepa, and the degradedproduct and intermediates were assessed deploying ECOSAR software. Thus, the proposed work haspotential which can be implemented in future for the large-scale purification of wastewater.

In this paper, we explore the uniqueness property between the transcendental meromorphic functions and differential polynomial. With the notion of weighted sharing, we generalised the many previous results on uniqueness property. Here we discussed the uniqueness of [P(f)(αf<sup>m</sup> + β)<sup>s</sup>]<sup>(k)</sup> - η(z) and [P(g)(αg<sup>m</sup> + β)<sup>s</sup>]<sup>(k)</sup> - η(z). Meanwhile, we generalised the result of Harina P. waghamore and Rajeshwari S[1].
