<P>A well-defined WO<SUB>3</SUB>/Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> composite comprised of single-crystalline Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> nanowire (Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB>NW) layers on top of the WO<SUB>3</SUB> nanoparticles (WO<SUB>3</SUB>NP) was synthesized via an in situ hydrothermal reaction. The single-crystalline Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> nanowires were uniformly grown on the surface of the WO<SUB>3</SUB> nanoparticle layer. This in situ hydrothermal process is also a general route for the synthesis of well-aligned Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> nanowires on various metal oxide substrates, such as TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, BiVO<SUB>4</SUB>, and ZnO. Compared to the sole Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> electrode, the resulting WO<SUB>3</SUB>NP/Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB>NW composite showed enhanced photoelectrochemical activity. The origin of this enhanced activity is mainly attributed to the enhancement of charge separation on the Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> layer, due to the effective photogenerated electron transfer from the Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> conduction band to that of WO<SUB>3</SUB>. Furthermore, the single-crystalline longitudinal structure of the Bi<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> nanowires can provide a direct electrical pathway through a single domain of nanowires.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Facile preparation of self-assembled wool-based graphene hydrogels by electron beam irradiation

Three dimensional self-assembled graphene hydrogels were easily fabricated by electron beam irradiation (EBI) using an aqueous solution of wool/poly(vinyl alcohol) and graphene oxide (GO). After exposure to various levels of EBI radiation, the highly porous, self-assembled, wool-based graphene hydrogels were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy; to determine the gel fraction, degree of swelling, gel strength, kinetics-of-swelling analyses and removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from the aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction results confirmed that EBI played a significantly important role in reducing GO to graphene. The adsorption equilibrium of Cr(VI) was reached within 80 min and the adsorption capacity was dramatically increased as the acidity of the initial solution was decreased from pH 5 to 2. Changes in ionic strength did not exert much effect on the adsorption behavior.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean Form of the Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (K-PUTS). Methods: Thirty-eight patients with Tourette’s disorder who visited Jeonbuk National University Hospital were assessed with the K-PUTS. Together with the PUTS, the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), the Children’s Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS), the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) rating scale (ARS), and the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) were implemented to evaluate concurrent and discriminant validity. Results: The internal consistency of items on the PUTS was high, with a Cronbach’s α of 0.79. The test-retest reliability of the PUTS, which was administered at 2 weeks to 2 months intervals, showed high reliability with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.60. There was a significant positive correlation between the overall PUTS score and the YGTSS score, showing concurrent validity. There was no correlation between the PUTS, CY-BOCS, and ASRS scores, demonstrating the discriminant validity of the PUTS. Factor analysis for construct validity revealed three factors: “presumed functional relationship between the tic and the urge to tic,” “the quality of the premonitory urge,” and “just right phenomena.” Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the K-PUTS is a reliable and valid scale for rating premonitory urge of tics.

<P>The preparation of metal oxides on a conductive substrate has been an important issue for improving photo electrochemical water splitting efficiency. In this work, a facile synthetic process is reported for single-crystalline WO3 microplates with variable thicknesses grown directly on a fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate followed by an annealing procedure. The WO3 microplate electrode showed an improved photocurrent under 1 sun irradiation (1.9 mA/cm(2) at 0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl, 100 mW/cm(2)) for water oxidation, including a significant enhancement in the visible light region compared to either a nanoparticle or a bulk film electrode. The enhanced water oxidation activity originates from both the single crystallinity with an optimum thickness and the oxygen-deficient characteristic of the WO3 microplates. To improve the photochemical stability, FeOOH electrocatalysts were deposited on the surfaces of the WO3 microplates. The resulting WO3/FeOOH composite electrode showed enhanced stability for water oxidation reactions.</P>
Perinatal exposure of fenarimol at low doses disturb reproductive performance in mice

Although fenarimol is a widely used chlorinated fungicide applied to fruits and vegetables and considered as a suspected endocrine disrupter (ED), transgeneration studies of fenarimol at its low doses are not available. Objectives: The aims of this study are to address the effect of perinatal exposure to low doses of fenarimol on reproductive performance and to investigate molecular and cellular mechanisms which are associated with. Methods: The body and organ weights and anogenital distance (AGD) of mice offspring (F1) maternally exposed to fenarimol were determined, and their reproductive performances were assessed by mating and ovarian follicular and sperm analyses. In addition, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in F1 ovaries were identified by DNA microarray. Up-regulated genes were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemical analysis. Results: Fenarimol-exposed F1 mice showed the shortened AGD, increased body weight with altered organ weights, increased number of pub, abundant follicles, and enhanced sperm count and quality. Microarray data showed 82 up-regulated and 742 down-regulated genes on the ovaries of fenarimol-exposed mice, in which Cyp17a1 and Cyp19a1 were up-regulated. Conclusions: Low doses of perinatal fenarimol exposure caused reproductive dysfunction in mice and thus can possibly impose risks on reproductive activities of human and wild-life.

<P>By using the single molecule detection (SMD) technique based on laser scanning fluorescence microscopy, we have developed a method to count the number of labeled fluorophores in a single biomolecule. The number of labeled fluorophores in an individual molecule was measured by counting the number of discrete level jumps in the fluorescence-intensity transients, or Gaussian fitting of the fluorescence-intensity histogram. The instabilities of intensity transients due to humid environments of biomolecules were minimized by optimizing the matrix materials and sample-preparation condition and adding a strong triplet quencher, AET (2-aminoethanethiol). After validating the counting method and estimating the counting uncertainties through observations of a well-defined number of fluorophores, the distribution of the number of incorporated fluorophores in a DNA strand was observed. The advantages in biological analysis by using a single-molecule fluorescence technique have been considered.</P>
Study on Adaptability of Rubber Dam Clamps on Primary Second Molars in Korean Children

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mesiodistal widths at the cervical level of primary second molars in Korean childrea, and to compare them with commercial rubber dam clamps commonly used in pediatric dentisty. Dental casts of 115 primary and mixed dentition children were studied. Cervical mesiodistal width (C-MD) was measured at the clinical cervical level of each primary second molar from buccal and lingual sides using a digial caliper (Absoulate, Mitutoyo, Kawasaki, Japan). The data were compared with mesiodistal widths of rubber dam clamps #203/204, #10/11, and #205 (Dentech, Japan). C-MDs of primary mandibular second molars were larger than those of primary maxillary second molars, and C-MDs at buccal sides were larger than those of lingual sides. All C-MDs showed statistically significant discrepancies to corresponding widths on clamps (p<0.05). However the amount of discrepancy was mild in maxillary teeth, while up to 1 mm of discrepancy was shown in mandibular teeth. In conclusion, C-MDs measured in this study imply a relatively fair fit of #10/#11 or #203/#204 clamps on primary maxillary second molars, while suggesting our need for a better clamp with proper size for primary mandibular second molars. 질 높은 치료를 제공하고 안전한 치료환경을 만들기 위한 러버댐 사용의 중요성은 소아치과에서 더욱 강조된다. 한편 잘못된 클램프의 장착으로 발생하는 통증과 불완전한 방습은 협조도를 떨어뜨리고 진정 치료 중 방해가 되기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 혼합치열기 아동 110명의 경석고 모형을 통해 제2유구치의 치경부 근원심 폭경을 측정하고 이를 #203/204, #10/11, #205 클램프(Dentech, Japan)의 근원심 폭경과 비교하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 제2유구치의 치경부 근원심 폭경은 하악이 상악보다 크고, 협측이 설측 보다 컸다. 모든 위치의 계측값이 클램프 폭경과 비교 시 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었으나, 그 차이값이 상악 제2유구치에서는 작은 반면, 하악 제2유구치에서는 1 mm에 가까운 것으로 나타났다. 상악 제2유구치는 #203/204 및 #10/11 클램프와 비교적 잘 맞는 반면 하악 제2유그치를 위해서는 보다 적절한 크기의 클램프가 필요한 것으로 보인다.
