Analysis of A Smooth-Wall Multi-Flared Horn Antenna

Smooth-wall multi-flared horns are widely used for high-performance narrow-band feed for reflector antennas for its structural simplicity as a replacement for corrugated horns. In this paper, characteristics of a smooth-wall multi-flare conical horn are analyzed using a commercial electromagnetic simulation tool. The horn is fed by a circular waveguide, has ten flares and operates at 2.4-3.4GHz. The length and aperture diameter of the horn is 15.1 and 3.8 wavelengths at 2.9GHz. The input reflection coefficient, cross-polarized gain patterns, phase patterns and phase center locations are obtained and analyzed. At 2.4-3.4GHz, the horn has reflection coefficient of less than -25dB, co-polarized gain of 18.4-21.4dB, cross-polarized gain of -8.2 to 3.4dB, E-plane 12-dB beamwidth of 33.4-47.6 degrees, and H-plane 3-dB beamwidth of 27.8-42.4 degrees.
Design of A Double-Ridged Horn Antenna

In this paper, a systematic design of a double-ridged horn antenna is presented. The double ridge profile is approximated with a piecewise linear curve and the ridge gap is determined from an exponential taper in the wave impedance. The location of the coaxial probe and the size of the back cavity are optimized for the widest bandwidth. The reflection coefficient, gain and phase patterns of the horn are analyzed. The designed horn has reflection coefficient of less than -10dB and gain of 9-18dB at 9-33GHz.
