We investigated a novel process for production of ethanol from glycerol using the yeast Pachysolen tannophilus. After optimization of the fermentation medium, repeated-batch flask culture was performed over a period of 378 hr using yeast cells immobilized on Celite. Our results indicated that the use of Celite for immobilization of P. tannophilus was a practical approach for ethanol production from glycerol, and should be suitable for industrial ethanol production.

We evaluated a more practical and cost-effective immobilization carriers for ethanol production using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Three candidate materials-rice hull, rice straw, and sawdust-were tested for their cell-adsorption capacity and operational durability. Derivatizations of rice hull, rice straw, and sawdust with the optimal concentration of 0.5 M of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl chloride hydrochloride (DEAE·HCl) resulted in > 95% adsorption of the initial yeast cells at 2 hr for DEAErice hull and DEAE-sawdust and in only approximately 80% adsorption for DEAE-rice straw. In addition, DEAE-sawdust was found to be a more practical carrier for immobilizing yeast cells in terms of operational durability in shaking flask cultures with two different speeds of 60 and 150 rpm. Furthermore, the biosorption isotherms of DEAE-rice hull, -rice straw, and -sawdust for yeast cells revealed that the Qmax of DEAE-sawdust (82.6 mg/g) was greater than that of DEAE-rice hull and DEAE-rice straw. During the 404-hr of continuous column reactor operation using yeast cells immobilized on DEAE-sawdust, no serious detachment of the yeast cells from the DEAE-sawdust was recorded. Ethanol yield of approximately 3.04 g/L was produced steadily, and glucose was completely converted to ethanol at a yield of 0.375 g-ethanol/g-glucose (73.4% of the theoretical value). Thus, sawdust is a promising practical immobilization carrier for ethanol production, with significance in the production of bioethanol as a biofuel.

Herein, we established a repeated-batch process for ethanol production from glycerol by immobilized Pachysolen tannophilus. The aim of this study was to develop a more practical and applicable ethanol production process for biofuel. In particular, using industrial-grade medium ingredients, the microaeration rate was optimized for maximization of the ethanol production, and the relevant metabolic parameters were then analyzed. The microaeration rate of 0.11 vvm, which is far lower than those occurring in a shaking flask culture, was found to be the optimal value for ethanol production from glycerol. In addition, it was found that, among those tested, Celite was a more appropriate carrier for the immobilization of P. tannophilus to induce production of ethanol from glycerol. Finally, through a repeated-batch culture, the ethanol yield (Ye/g) of 0.126 ± 0.017 g-ethanol/g-glycerol (n = 4) was obtained, and this value was remarkably comparable with a previous report. In the future, it is expected that the results of this study will be applied for the development of a more practical and profitable long-term ethanol production process, thanks to the industrial-grade medium preparation, simple immobilization method, and easy repeated-batch operation.

지난 몇 년 사이 인라인 스케이트는 젊은층을 중심으로 인기있는 스포츠가 되었으며 이러한 대중화와 더불어 인라인 스케이트와 관련된 사고 빈도도 증가하는 추세이다. 따라서 본 연구는 인라인 스케이트 이용에 따른 사고율과 이용습관 형태, 손상 유형 및 위험 요인을 알아보고자 시행되었다. 2003년 9월 14일부터 9월 24일까지 경주시 ○○초등학교 6학년, ○○중학교 1학년, ○○여자고등학교 1학년, ○○고등학교 1학년, 동국대학교 의과대학 의학과 학생, 경주황성·포항 해맞이 공원의 성인을 포함한 총설문 대상자 1,305명 중 인라인 스케이트 이용자 392명을 대상으로 단면 연구를 수행하였다. 조사에 앞서 병원 방문과 사전 조사를 시행 하였으며 자기 기입식 설문지를 통해 정보를 수집하였다. 초, 중, 고 인라인 스케이트 전체 이용률은 28.1% 사고율은 30.1%로 나왔으며 주로 젊은층에서 사고가 많았으며 나이가 증가할수록 빈도가 증가하였다. 보호 장비 착용률은 44.4%로 조사되었다. 손상 부위로는 무릎과 상지 부위가 많은 것으로 조사되었으며 손상 유형은 찰과상과 타박상이 많았다. 스케이트를 타기 시작한지 1개월 이내에서 사고를 가장 많이 당한 것으로 나타났다. 전체 부상자의 20%가 후유증이 있었던 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 인라인 스케이트 이용자들의 사고율이 비교적 높음을 알 수 있었다. 손상 부위의 무릎 및 상지 집중 현상으로 인해 무릎과 상지 부위의 보호대 착용이 필요할 것으로 생각되며 또한 사고를 줄이기 위해 초기 기술 습득 단계부터 전문가를 통한 체계적 교육과 안전 의식 고양이 필요할 것으로 보인다. In the past several years, Inline skating has become a popular sport among young people. With popularization of Inline skating, the number of injuries has increased proportionately. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of injuries, the behaviors of skating, the nature and risk factors of injuries. We conducted a questionnaire an 1,305 subjects from Sep. 14 to 24, 2003. The Inline skaters were 392. These participation were mainly students from ○○elementary school, ○○middle school, ○○women's high school, ○○high school, Dongguk medical school, and adult skaters in several parks. The prevalence of injuries were 30.1%. Injuries were predominant from younger age and frequencies were increased according to increasing age. The most common location of injuries were both knee and the upper extremities. Most of injury type were skin abrasion and contusion. Injuries were highest within one month after First skating. 20% of injuries experienced a sequela. The results of this study show the severity of Inline skating-related injuries. We expect that the knee and the upper extrimities protectors should be used adequatly. Also to reduce injuries, when the skills are obtainded, the specilized learning programs and safety awareness are needed.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the incidence of and factors associated with major complications, delayed discharge, and emergency room (ER) visits or readmission after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for single hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) <3 cm in a recent cohort at a tertiary cancer center. Methods: A total of 188 patients with treatment-naïve single HCCs <3 cm who underwent RFA between January 2018 and April 2021 were included in the analysis. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with major complications, delayed discharge, and ER visits or readmission. Local tumor progression (LTP) and overall survival were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional-hazards regression analysis. Results: Major complications occurred in 3.2% (6/188) of the patients. The longest diameter of the ablation zone was significantly larger in patients with major complications (P=0.023). Delayed discharge occurred in 5.8% (9/188) of the patients, for which albumin-bilirubin grade 3 was identified as an important determinant. No variables other than major complications were significantly associated with ER visits or readmission, which occurred in 7.0% (13/188) of the patients. Major complications, delayed discharge, and ER visits or readmission were not substantially related to the post-treatment outcomes of LTP and overall survival. Conclusion: This study confirmed RFA as a highly safe procedure for single HCCs <3 cm, despite the rapidly changing RFA techniques in the most recent cohort. A large ablation zone and poor liver function were predictors of major complications and delayed discharge, respectively.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is an opportunistic, potentially life-threatening fungal disease. This infective disease invades not only the facial sinuses, but also the maxilla, zygoma, and rhino-cerebral structures with a massive destruction of the facial skeletons and soft tissue. This disease progresses within various underlying diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, hematologic malignancy, renal failure, and systemic immunodepression. The relationship between mucormycosis and these underlying conditions have been discussed extensively in the literature. The authors studied 6 cases of RCM diagnosed by a tissue biopsy and treated at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, from 1997 to 2012. Patients were treated with several kinds of surgical interventions and antifungal agents, and their clinical & radiological signs, underlying conditions, surgical methods, and outcomes were analyzed.

<P>A novel strain, designated strain CU3-7<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from faeces of a two-week-old baby. The isolate was Gram-staining-positive, anaerobic and rod-shaped. Results from 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain CU3-7<SUP>T</SUP> was phylogenetically affiliated with members of the genus <I>Bifidobacterium</I>. Strain CU3-7<SUP>T</SUP> showed the highest level of sequence similarity with <I>Bifidobacterium adolescentis</I> KCTC 3216<SUP>T</SUP> (98.4 %), followed by <I>Bifidobacterium ruminantium</I> KCTC 3425<SUP>T</SUP> (97.9 %). Analysis of <I>hsp60</I> sequences showed that strain CU3-7<SUP>T</SUP> was closely related to <I>B. adolescentis</I> KCTC 3216<SUP>T</SUP> (94.0 %) and <I>B. ruminantium</I> KCTC 3425<SUP>T</SUP> (92.5 %). The DNA–DNA hybridization values with the closely related strains were all below the cut-off value for species delineation, 17.0 % with <I>B. ruminantium</I> KCTC 3425<SUP>T</SUP> and 14.9 % with <I>B. adolescentis</I> KCTC 3216<SUP>T</SUP>. Fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase activity was detected. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C<SUB>16 : 0</SUB> (27.7 %), C<SUB>18 : 1</SUB>ω9<I>c</I> (27.4 %) and C<SUB>18 : 1</SUB>ω9<I>c</I> dimethylacetate (15.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 58.6 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomy, strain CU3-7<SUP>T</SUP> should be classified as the type strain of a novel species within the genus <I>Bifidobacterium</I>, for which the name <I>Bifidobacterium faecale</I> sp. nov. is proposed ( = KACC 17904<SUP>T</SUP> = JCM 19861<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>
