<P>This study aimed at investigating the ballistic performance of Zr-based bulk metallic glass/Ti surface composites fabricated by high-energy electron-beam irradiation. The ballistic impact test was conducted on surface composite plates to evaluate the ballistic performance. Since the surface composite layers were observed to block effectively a fast traveling projectile, while many cracks were formed in the composite layers, the surface composite plates were not perforated. The surface composite layer containing ductile β dendritic phases showed the better ballistic performance than the one without containing dendrites because dendritic phases could hinder the propagation of shear bands or cracks.</P>

<P>The rotary flux-pump using HTS tape has been studied for superconducting rotating machinery application. The charging speed and saturation current of the rotary HTS flux-pump is closely related to magnetic flux linkage passing through the HTS tape. To analyze charging parameters that effect pumping rate and saturation current of the flux-pump, methods of changing the rotating speed, shape of permanent magnet, width of HTS tape, and magnetic flux intensity have been investigated in previous studies <xref ref-type='bibr' rid='ref1 ref2'>[1]</xref>– <xref ref-type='bibr' rid='ref3'>[3]</xref>. In this paper, we have tried to test three cases to investigate the pumping rate and saturation current: 1) two different background materials, iron and Bakelite, were used to compare the magnetic flux linkage reinforcement; 2) two HTS tapes were overlapped to extend the magnetic flux linkage area, and each HTS tape was connected to an HTS coil; and 3) the parallel joint was conducted between the flux-pump and the HTS coil to compose a closed loop for persistent current mode. In order to measure the charging speed and pumping rate, a Hall sensor was installed at the center of the HTS coil.</P>

<P>In this paper, we present the effects of curing temperature on switching between the transparent and translucent states in a polymer-stabilized liquid-crystal (PSLC) cell. When cured at a low temperature, polymer structures are formed without disturbing the initial alignment of LCs so that haze in the transparent state is dramatically reduced. Moreover, we can achieve very fast switching between the haze-free transparent and high-haze translucent states because there is a little degradation in the performance of the transparent and translucent states when the polymer concentration is increased. We demonstrated an ON–OFF response time of less than 3 ms and a gray-to-gray response time of less than 6 ms in a PSLC cell.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were readily synthesized in TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) ultrathin films, which is alternately assembled with Ti(O-nBu)<SUB>4</SUB> and PVA via a surface sol-gel process. The photochemical reduction of as-embedded Ag<SUP>+</SUP> ions in the film led to the formation of well-controllable AgNPs in size, distribution and electrochemical properties. AgNP-immobilized TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA films were characterized by quartz crystal microbalance measurements, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The increase in thickness of TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA hybrid films led to an increase in the surface plasmon resonance peak, showing a blueshift in UV–vis absorption. As the alternate cycles of TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA thin film increased (3.5-, 5.5-, and 10.5-cycle), the sizes of prepared AgNPs gradually decreased (9.3, 8.0, and 6.2 nm, respectively) and the distributions of the AgNPs become narrower, correspondingly. Regarding its electrochemical properties, the TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA hybrid films showed a well-defined reversible redox system on gold electrodes (GEs), as observed by a pair of current peaks, and further exhibited electrocatalytic activity, and a low limit of detection (LOD) for hydrogen dioxide (H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>). A lower cycle of thinner hybrid film, 1.5-cycle TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA, showed relatively higher electrochemical and amperometric responses than those of 3.5-, 5.5-, and 10.5-cycle films. Based on the amperometric response of the AgNP-incorporated 1.5-cycle TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/PVA film, the linear regression equation was acquired as <I>I</I>(μA) = −0.0481 [H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>] (μM) + 0.4099, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9872. Thus, the significant sensitivity to H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> up to 0.0481 μA/μM and LOD of 0.11 μM were achieved, respectively.</P>

The congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited cardiac disorder characterized by increased QT intervals and a tendency to experience ventricular tachycardia, which can cause fainting, heart failure, or sudden death. A 4-year-old female patient undergoing velopharyngeal correction surgery under general anesthesia suddenly developed Torsades de pointes. Although the patient spontaneously resolved to sinus rhythm without treatment, subsequent QT prolongation persisted. Here, we report a case of concealed LQTS with a literature review.

SFI-bar is prefabricated bar system and can be assembled at chairside without soldering or welding, thus reducing bone loss, costs and time. A 53-year-old male patient, who had severely absorbed mandible, hoped to wear a stable mandiblular denture. Four implants were placed in the extraction site of canine and 1st molar. Early loaded temporary denture with solitary type attachment was delivered 3 weeks after surgery. 3 month later, SFI-bar was connected and adjusted at chairside. Then, implant overdenture using SFI-bar was delivered. This case report showed that a satisfactory clinical result was achieved by 4-implantsupported overdenture using the SFI-Bar system in a mandibular edentulous patient.
