ABSTRACT This thesis attempted to examine the exegetical and theological analysis of social justice in Amos 8:4-8 with special reference to the issue of social-political and religious justice among Chin Christians in Myanmar. Chapter one introduced the issue and the importance of the present study. Chapter two dealt with the concept of justice, definition and etymology of justice and the different views of justice in secular world and the Bible and discussed their implications. Chapter three provided the exegetical and rhetorical analysis of the text and the relevance to contemporary world. Chapter four explored the theological attention of Amos’ social justice and the demand of social justice in the context of Chin people from various perspectives. Chapter five summarized the thesis and concluded with the implication of the research. This thesis showed that the covenant relationship was broken by the people of God when the rich and the powerful disobeyed God through social injustice toward those who were underprivileged. The powerful became independent toward God and the powerless and as a result God intervened to keep his covenant with his people. The divine action was thus carried out in the context of the ‘day of the Lord,’ or the ‘day of judgment’. There are two choices for the powerful: life and death. However they intentionally chose death over life and as a result, their end time was imminent.
