      • An assessment of a Web-based instructional program developed for Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services

Sansing, Joyce Anne University of Georgia 2000 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of, and satisfaction with, a modular, Internet-based instructional program that Athens Technical College personnel developed for entry-level eligibility workers at the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). The model was developed, then piloted with two groups of new DFCS workers in Albany, Georgia, and Savannah, Georgia. The study focused on the program pilot that was conducted with fifteen trainees in January 1999. The major research questions investigated the satisfaction of participants with the Internet-based instructional program, the characteristics of the computer-mediated instruction that supported or inhibited learning, the effectiveness of the instructional model in developing the knowledge and skills needed by entry-level eligibility workers, and the modifications needed for improvement and refinement of the instructional program. A qualitative case study approach was selected. Qualitative data were collected during semi-structured individual interviews before and after the training, during group interviews at the midpoint in the training, and via reviews of participant training records and field notes from four weeks of participant observation. The findings of the study were that participants were satisfied with the Web-based training program, despite a few identified flaws and weaknesses. The program was determined to be effective based on average participant scores of 80 or higher on three specified indicators of performance. The modifications and refinements needed were identified as the incorporation of audio, video, and animation into the instruction; the reorganization of long modules; the development of a mechanism to better communicate the length and content of a module to the participant; the creation of a mechanism for trainees to reenter the program at the point at which they exited; the minimization of the requirement for scrolling and for entering responses in a specified format; the correction of inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the content; and the revision of the program to use a newer, more reliable version of Netscape. This study is significant in that its outcomes will assist in determining the future direction of a training program for a state agency. In a broader context, the study is significant because it addresses the training of adult (non-college age) learners.

      • Practical treatment of nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation in carbon-13/nitrogen-15-labeled nucleic acids: Application to d(CGCGAATTCGCG)

Coker, George Sansing, II Yale University 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2589

A computational approach to the modeling of heteronuclear NMR data is outlined in the relaxation matrix formalism convenient for application to macromolecules. Given a model structure, the principal axis system of the diffusion tensor is computed or taken as that of the moment of inertia tensor. All pair-wise heteronuclear and homonuclear dipolar interaction tensors are then computed in this frame, and the chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) tensors are placed on each nucleus of interest. The latter may be taken from experimental data, or provided by electronic structure calculation at the desired level of theory. Using these data as input, the relaxation rates, R 1 and R2, and the ssNOE enhancement are systematically computed. The computed rates are compared to experimental data for the determination of rotational hydrodynamics and/or intramolecular dynamics parameters. No assumptions are made as to the relative orientations of any of the interaction tensors, and fully anisotropic rigid body diffusion is accommodated. The method is useful for testing the validity of a wide range of assumptions often made in the analysis of NMR relaxation data for macromolecular systems. The software package, Y&barbelow;et A&barbelow;nother R&barbelow;elaxation M&barbelow;atrix (YARM) program, was enhanced to perform these calculations. As a model system, a nucleic acid helix, d(CGCGAATTCGCG), D12, was chosen, for which several models exist in the literature. The dynamics of DNA are complex, and the rotational hydrodynamics are deemed indeterminate for data collected at a single field; however, the fast motion parameters of the “model-free” formalism are determined and discussed with respect to the “worm-like” chain model of DNA.

      • Identity and globalization in carnival theatre

Sans, Maria Isabel Arizona State University 2007 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 1551

This study examines the dialectics of the local and the global as presented in popular musical carnival theatre performances in the years 2000-2007 in Montevideo, Uruguay, from the perspective of Latin American Cultural Studies. Carnival theatre performs local identity as a national issue with different points of view about the future, and represents globalization as a new way of imperialist control where the corporations play a significant role. The local referents, the collective characteristics of the creation and the affective elements involved in the performances make carnival itself a very important element of identity. Carnival celebration in Uruguay consists in a one month long festival of musical popular theatre, performed during the summer, in the open air, in neighborhoods' temporary stages or "tablados". Every night, families and groups of friends gather around these tablados to assist to the performances, talk with neighbors and friends, eat and drink what they sell around, flirt or play. In this informal and familiar context, the comments generated by the performance help discuss ideas and develop a sense of collectivity among the participants that generates a favorable context for creating identity. Carnival theatre discusses the actual identity between the tensions of the real chances for the country to exist in a meaningful way in the globalization context. The performers use utopias and dreams to project desires and goals and at the same time they question the real chances for a positive change and oppose them to the alternative of emigration. The generational issue is the most relevant element indicating different identities among the people, because of the way of evaluating the past and the future, and because of a particular kind of humor and structure in the performances. However, carnival spirit as the joy of getting together with friends and family to communicate meaningful ideas in a meaningful environment is common to all participants of all ages.
