The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic increased college students’ risk and prevalence of mental health conditions. However, campus mental health resources have been underutilized, and referral of students in need hindered by bystanders' (i.e., faculty, staff, peers) lack of preparedness. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to improve bystanders’ preparedness using evidence-based practice (EBP). Expected outcomes included increased referrals to and utilization of mental health resources and improved access to care for college students. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory and Bystander Effect Theory, the project also focused on the concepts of self-efficacy and confidence. Workshops, based on the BeVocal bystander intervention model, were provided virtually to volunteers from a suburban, community college’s faculty/staff and student populations. Participants completed anonymous surveys for demographic data and Gatekeeper Behavior Surveys for self-rated confidence, preparedness, and likelihood to act pre- and post-workshop. A postcard was developed and provided for participants as a resource post training. Significant improvement was found post-workshop in participants’ preparedness (p < 0.001), self-efficacy (p < 0.001), and likelihood to intervene (p = 0.002) for both sample groups. A 115.09% increase in concerning behavior reports and an 87.54% increase in referrals to college mental health resources occurred during the four months after the workshop implementation. Access to mental health care forcollege students was promoted through community engagement and increased preparedness to recognize and refer. Based upon the results, the BeVocal bystander intervention model and workshops will be continued at the community college through a grant obtained for the program.
The credibility constraint: Credibility and leadership in professional service firms

Credibility has long been considered an important element of leadership effectiveness. Yet, little research has investigated the nature, sources, and outcomes of organizational leaders' credibility. This paper presents an analysis of interviews with 60 leaders in two professional settings -- academic medical centers and law firms -- in which credibility emerged as a central theme and a driving force shaping leaders' behavior. I provide a top-down, as opposed to subordinate-centric, portrayal of leader credibility in professional service firms. In specific, I discuss how leaders conceive of their own and other leaders' credibility and how they respond to their beliefs about its requirements. Drawing on the interviewees' responses, I define credibility as the perception on the part of a potential or actual leader's professional peers, subordinates, and superiors that he or she is worthy of respect and consideration as a source of influence. My findings suggest that leaders pursue credibility through at least two important avenues: attempts to influence perceptions of their competence to serve the group's mission and attempts to influence perceptions of their allegiance to the interests of their professional constituencies. This research also examines processes influencing the pursuit of credible leadership candidates. According to the interviews, search committees favor leadership candidates who appear credible on the basis of past professional accomplishments but give less attention to leadership skills as a consequence.
Identification of a novel role in ribosome biogenesis for the pre-mRNA splicing factor, PRP43P

The DExD/H-box family of RNA-dependent ATPases is found in a wide range of cellular processes including transcription, translation, RNA export from the cytoplasm, pre-mRNA splicing and ribosome biogenesis. These proteins are believed to couple ATP hydrolysis to ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex remodeling in order to catalyze structural changes in RNA-dependent processes. However, it is not clear how the DExD\H-box ATPases remodel their target RNP complexes: some ATPases appear to target specific RNPs whereas others appear to function as general chaperones to modulate correct RNA processing and folding. Prp43p is an essential DExD/H-box ATPase that is required for the release of the lariat intron from the spliceosome. The goal of this work was to identify the in vivo target of Prp43p and to understand how the activity of Prp43p is regulated on the spliceosome. A directed enhancer screen identified 10 non-essential genes that negatively regulate the activity of Prp43p on the spliceosome. All of the non-essential proteins assemble on the spliceosome prior to the first step of splicing, suggesting that their presence alone is not sufficient to recruit Prp43p to its in vivo target. A model is proposed describing the recruitment of Prp43p to the spliceosome. In addition, an exciting and novel role for Prp43p in ribosome biogenesis was identified. Prp43p associates with a number of ribosomal precursor RNAs (pre-rRNAs) from both the small and large ribosomal subunit, making it one of a very small number of transiently associated ribosome biogenesis factors involved in the biogenesis of both subunits. In addition, Prp43p also associates with a wide range of small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs). Intriguingly, both the lariat intron and the pre-rRNAs associated with Prp43p all have newly generated 3' ends, suggesting that Prp43p may target RNAs with newly generated 3' ends for RNP remodeling. This supports a role in which Prp43p functions as a general chaperone to unwind RNPs on both the spliceosome and during ribosome biogenesis.
Quantum behavior of an atomic Fermi gas

Results from the production and study of the first degenerate Fermi gas of atoms are presented. By adapting the magnetic trapping and evaporative cooling techniques that were used to produce atomic Bose-Einstein condensation, a gas of fermionic <super>40</super>K atoms is cooled into the quantum regime. The fundamental difficulty in cooling a gas of fermionic, compared to bosonic, atoms is the lack of rethermalizing collisions in a spin polarized sample. This obstacle is explored in cold collision studies and then overcome by magnetically trapping two spinstates of <super>40</super>K and developing a technique for simultaneous evaporative cooling. The ability to cool an interacting, two-component gas to one-quarter of the Fermi temperature is demonstrated. A spin-polarized, ideal gas can be cooled to as low as ∼0.17 times the Fermi temperature. The emergence of quantum behavior at low temperature is observed both as “excess” energy in the gas and a distortion of the momentum distribution compared to the classical expectation. Furthermore, the effect of the Fermi-Dirac statistics of the gas on individual collisions via Pauli blocking is observed through measurements of the thermal relaxation time.

The scientific study of sexual desire is characterized by a series of unconnected mini-theories and dissimilar empirical findings. This research develops a functional theory which deconstructs sexual desire to include two conceptually meaningful variables which comprise a person's “bifurcated lovemap:” an emotional disposition toward fantasy and an emotional disposition toward interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between objectified, i.e., depersonalized, sexual fantasies and interpersonal attachments, specifically investigating the “personal bias” held toward objectified fantasies among people with chronic hypersexuality, e.g., sexual addiction/compulsivity and the internal working models these persons hold toward “comfortable interpersonal attachments.” A quantitative analysis suggests that 22 (N = 22) self-identified sexual addicts were able to reduce the power of their objectified fantasies and increase their ‘underdeveloped’ sense comfort with interpersonal relationships by experiencing imagery restructuring exercises in the form of guided imageries. A thorough analysis of the data allowed for the emergence of an axiom associated with the two relevant variables: As comfort toward interpersonal relationships increases, the negative power of objectified fantasies is diminished. This study is of special significance as it provides a pragmatic model which is able to link praxis with theory. Further, the results suggest that objectified fantasies are normative, purposeful and enduring and that the meta-communication underlying their symbolic form is a mythical allegory which allows for perceived responsiveness and affirmation. As a means to support this theory's coherence, I suggest that future research be directed toward persons with sexually avoidant behaviors. This would assist in the development of an elegant theory related to the variable nature of sexual desire which is able to link both measurable variables and clear-cut points of intervention to the diversity of its expression when it obstructs humanistic expression.
