I here reconstruct “imaginative expansion,” an array of reading practices by which published narratives were treated as if they were fundamentally incomplete. Far from being the final word on the subject, originary texts were for eighteenth-century readers merely a starting point—common to all, but desperately in need of supplementation through the invention of further details, episodes, and sequels. I contend that the paradox inherent in these (eccentric) practices—lack stemming from plenitude, the seemingly teeming ever in need of more—can bring into focus a constellation of more broadly held assumptions about literature, publicity, and property, the traces of which still shape our reading experiences. Indeed, my investigation substantially complicates and rewrites two of the most pressing issues in literary study today: the invention of the public sphere, and the origins of our current conceptions of heritage and canonicity. Recent study has focused upon the institutions which reproduced these entities, such as schools and grand publishing ventures. What has gone unexamined is how individual members of a public or heirs to a national heritage came to regard themselves as such; came to believe, as Charles Churchill put it, that if a text could become both “yours” and “mine,” it could thereby become “public property,” part of the cultural legacy binding together disparate readers into the “irrational public sphere.” In recovering a range of alternate public spheres—modes of sociability which did not demand suppression of play and the body—my work serves as both complement and corrective to these institutionally-centered accounts (like Habermas's) by reconstructing the individual practices through which readers envisioned themselves as part of imagined communities constituted around the texts which they themselves designated as the glories of the national heritage. Individual chapters examine the decline of reading à clef, the practice of intensely visualizing print narratives (such as those of Inkle and Yarico or Hogarth's progresses) as if they were theatrical performances, the phenomenon of literary characters (especially Falstaff) migrating out of their originary texts and into texts of their own, and the flurries of readerly activity which accompanied the publication of Richardson's Pamela and Sterne's Tristram Shandy.

Cervical cancer is a problem not only in the United States, but worldwide. Even though statistical rates of cervical cancer is decreasing in the United States, the incidence worldwide is not changing. Specific ethnic groups, lower socioeconomic income populations and areas with high incidences of sexually transmitted diseases still have a stable or increasing incidence of cervical cancer even in the United States. The increase in cervical cancer mirrors the increased rate of human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease and a known precursor of cervical cancer. Antioxidants have been studied in relation to cardiovascular diseases, the aging process and cancers. This study investigated the antioxidants thymoquinone, selenium, and lycopene on SiHa, a cervical cancer cell line preinfected with human papillomavirus. The hypothesis was that the combination of thymoquinone, selenium, and lycopene would have a detrimental effect on the viability, biochemical analysis, and morphology of SiHa cells. The specific aims were (1) to study the effect of estrogen at different concentrations by conventional delivery vs. sustained delivery on the viability and behavior of SiHa cell line, (2) to establish the role of selenium, lycopene and thymoquinone on SiHa cells in the presence of, or in the absence of estrogen, (3) to determine if a combination of estrogen, lycopene, selenium, and/or thymoquinone are more effective in slowing the proliferation of SiHa cells then when used alone either with conventional delivery or drug delivery systems, (4) to evaluate the expression of epidermal growth factor in SiHa cells. Results indicated that Estrogen 10 pg was the optimal dose of estrogen to use with these cells. In the study of the antioxidants, selenium alone appeared to be chemoprotective, but when used in combination with estrogen, lycopene and TQ caused cellular damage as evidenced by decreased proliferation rate, increased glutathione levels, and increased MDA levels.

To facilitate ferroelectric-based actuator integration with silicon electronics fabrication technology, we have developed a route to produce biaxially textured ferroelectrics on amorphous layers by using biaxially textured MgO templates. Using a kinematical electron scattering model, we show that the RHEED pattern from a biaxially textured polycrystalline film can be calculated from an analytic solution to the electron scattering probability. We found that diffraction spot shapes are sensitive to out-of-plane orientation distributions and in-plane RHEED rocking curves are sensitive to the in-plane orientation distribution. Using information from the simulation, a RHEED-based experimental technique was developed for in situ measurement of MgO biaxial texture. The accuracy of this technique was confirmed by comparing RHEED measurements of in-plane and out-of-plane orientation distribution with synchrotron x-ray rocking curve measurements. Biaxially textured MgO was grown on amorphous Si3N4 by ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). MgO was e-beam evaporated onto the amorphous substrate with a simultaneous 750--1200 eV Ar+ ion bombardment at 45° from normal incidence. We observed a previously unseen, dramatic texture evolution in IBAD MgO using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and RHEED-based quantitative texture measurements of MgO. The first layers of IBAD MgO are diffraction amorphous until the film is about 3.5 nm thick. During the next 1 nm of additional growth, we observed rapid biaxial texture evolution. RHEED and TEM studies indicate that biaxially textured MgO film results from a solid phase crystallization of biaxially textured MgO crystals in an amorphous matrix. Biaxially textured perovskite ferroelectrics were grown on biaxially textured MgO templates using sol-gel, metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Through RHEED-based biaxial texture analysis we observed that the heteroepitaxial ferroelectric in-plane orientation distribution, deposited using ex situ techniques (not performed in the same high vacuum growth environment where the MgO was deposited), narrowed significantly with respect to the in-plane orientation distribution of its MgO template (from 11° to 6° FWHM). Evidence from cross section TEM and RHEED suggest that atmospheric moisture degrades the crystallinity of highly defective, misaligned MgO grains and that heteroepitaxially grown ferroelectrics preferentially nucleate on well-aligned grains and over grow misaligned regions of MgO.

Public American college football programs among the NCAA's football bowl subdivision (the FBS 100) were appraised using theories of modern financial economics, namely intrinsic valuation theory. Costs of capital were assessed for each of the 100 programs, uniquely, and were used to discount projected cash flows. Independent variables were identified from the literature, while multivariate and univariate regression analysis were used to predict intrinsic value, in a simulated market. Also, pricing multiples were developed using the NFL as a peer industry for comparison. Results indicate that long-term team performance, stadium age, host university endowment size, undergraduate student enrollment, and head coach's guaranteed salary are each correlated to intrinsic value (p<0.05), while stadium size predicts intrinsic value (p<0.05). Also, team revenues explain most of the variance in team value (p<0.05). Further, historical returns among the FBS 100 demonstrate resistance to the effects of the recession of 2008-2009. Finally, higher expenses were theoretically shown to be associated with future expected value increases.

Lesion studies have shown that the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is critical for declarative memory, the conscious or explicit memory for new events and facts. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a recently developed brain-imaging technique that is well suited for examining activity in the closely spaced structures of the MTL. We used fMRI to examine the MTL during the formation and retrieval of declarative memories. In the first study, subjects studied pictures prior to fMRI scanning. Then, during scanning, we examined MTL activity occurring during retrieval of those pictures. In the same subjects, we examined activity during the encoding of novel pictures. Retrieval of previously studied pictures led to greater activity in the subicular complex of the hippocampus, whereas encoding of novel pictures led to greater activity in the parahippocampal cortex. Next, we examined the encoding of auditory and visual stimuli. Subjects studied novel sounds and novel pictures. Encoding novel sounds led to activation of anterior parahippocampal cortex. Encoding of novel pictures activated anterior and posterior parahippocampal cortex. These findings are congruent with anatomical data showing partial segregation of auditory and visual input into the parahippocampal cortex. We then used event-related designs to examine neural activity that predicted subsequent retrieval of studied items. Subjects studied color photographs or words during scanning. After scanning, subjects performed memory tests to determine which items they confidently remembered, which items were merely familiar, and which items they forgot. Statistical maps were constructed to display brain regions where greater activity at study was correlated with better subsequent retrieval. The magnitude of focal activations in bilateral parahippocampal cortex predicted greater subsequent memory for studied items. Finally, we examined activity in the anterior parahippocampal gyrus, with a directed approach based upon prior studies in the monkey. By modulating the associative demands of a memory task, we were able to detect activity changes in the perirhinal cortex. The ability of fMRI to detect modulation of activity in the anterior regions of the MTL, where the most significant pathology of Alzheimer's disease is found, supports the potential use of fMRI as an early diagnostic tool for Alzheimer's disease.

The study assessed the interplay among literacy, church activity, and religious orientation and examined the extent to which literacy predicts church activity in the presence of private religious behavior. One hundred fifty-seven subjects were administered measures of intrinsic religiousness, extrinsic religiousness, literacy levels and measures of church activity. The findings from this study suggest that literacy is related to activity, but in a way that is more complex than many investigators have considered. The results of the multiple regression analysis helped clarify the ability of literacy to predict church activity in the presence of religious orientation. Results further indicated that in the presence of the others, only intrinsic religiosity maintained its significant predictive ability. Implications for research and theory are discussed.

The scaling down of the dimensions of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) in the microelectronics industry is approaching a fundamental limit due to direct electron tunneling through the silicon dioxide (SiO 2) gate dielectric. Consequently, a higher dielectric constant (κ) material must be engineered to replace SiO2 (κ = 3.9) so that the gate dielectric can be made physically thicker to prevent leakage current and enhance reliability. However, the solution is not as straightforward as simply replacing SiO2 with a higher-κ material. The high-κ dielectric must meet several stringent requirements in order to effectively replace SiO2. This is proving to be a difficult problem to solve, and therefore there is a need for a segue material to extend MOSFET scaling for the near term. Silicon oxynitride (SiOxN y, κ: 3.9–7.0) has received much attention as a segue material, due to its enhanced durability and diffusion barrier properties. Several methods have been investigated for producing SiOxNy, however much work needs to be done to develop a method, which allows control over the nitrogen composition and location to produce a film with a high enough electronic quality to replace SiO2. To this end, a combined electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) and radio frequency (RF) plasma process was employed to study SiOxNy films with the goal of preserving the high quality silicon-SiO2 interface and increasing the nitrogen content towards the surface of the film to increase κ. Specifically, the plasma nitridation of thermal SiO2 films, and the plasma oxynitridation of bare silicon substrates were studied. Plasma process parameters such as; plasma mode, chamber pressure, RF bias magnitude, ECR power, and gas feed composition were varied allowing the ability to tailor the film properties. Selection of the proper plasma parameters has afforded control over film thickness, nitrogen content, nitrogen location, density of interface trapped charge ( Dit), and density of fixed charge (Dfc). Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), atomic force microscopy (AFM), capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements, and thermal annealing studies were used to characterize the films and are presented throughout.
