This research is based on the diverse speech level changing strategies used in discourse among native speakers of Korean. The objective is to outline the factors that contribute to differences in speech level and the functions that they serve. In the first chapter previous research related to speech level in the Korean language is reviewed and the objectives of this thesis are presented. The second chapter examines speech levels and speech level changes as well as the principles of courtesy which form the basic concepts of this research. The third section explains methodology and subjects of the research. The conversations of Korean native speakers in natural settings are analysed and the factors contributing to a change in speech levels are discussed. Factors are divided into those external to discourse (social relationship and intimacy level) and factors internal to discourse (psychological and linguistic factors) for analysis. In chapter 4 speech level changes occurring due to social relationships and intimacy level and their functions as well as characteristics are examined. The practical linguistic forms that these speech level changes take are also looked at.In observing social relationships, the polite form speech level is a psychological factor that used as a courtesy technique to softens the atmosphere. In discourse itself, speech level shifts are often used in humor and joke telling, eliciting a positive response, teasing, etc. The casual form speech level is shown to occur according to psychological and linguistic factors. The psychological factors include courtesy techniques expressing closeness and eliciting intimacy. Linguistic factors include explanations and examples supplementing previous discussion, questions repeated for confirmation, curt answers, enumerating answers, concluding discussion, praising the other''s comments, etc. are linguistic necessities shown to contribute to the progression and normalization of the conversation.Analysis of the results according to intimacy level show that when there is a high level of intimacy, shifts in speech level are used as a psychological confirmation of the established familiarity. When there is a low level of intimacy speech level shifts are used in order to elicit that formerly non-existent harmonious human relationship.Examination of the practical usage of speech level changes reveals that differing speech levels (including sentence closing endings such as -해요, -하셔, non-closing, casual structures, closing casual endings such as -가, -구나, -나, -네, -다, -지, etc. as well as conjunctions such as -고, -는은데, -니까, -다라고, -아어여서, etc.) each serve a wide variety of discourse functions. In chapter 5 an plan for applying research results to Korean language education for non-native Korean speakers is presented. In the final chapter the results are summarized and the conclusions are presented.
