The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between depression and helplessness in the elderly.
The study sample was one hundred elderly over sixty-five gathering together at silver-centers and institutions for living in D city.
Data were collected by interview with structured questionnaire from Oct.1 to Dec. 31 in 2003.
The measurement tools were Short Form Geriatric Depression (GDS-SF) and helplessness scale developed by Jung(1998) for Korean elderly.
The data were analysed with SPSS/WIN 10.0 by frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression.
The results of this study were as follows :
1. The mean score of depression of subjects was 2.12±1.49 and helplessness was 2.71±0.30.
2. There was a statistically significant difference in depression according to perceived health status(F=5.224, p=0.001).
3. There was a statistically significant difference in helplessness according to the age(F=3.185, p=0.027), perceived health status (F=3.750, p=0.007), religion (F=5.941, p=0.001) and current spouse(t=-0.384, p=0.026).
4. There was a statistically significant correlation between depression and helplessness(r=0.225, p=0.024).
5. The perceived health status, helplessness and length of education accounted for 28.4% of the variance in depression.
6. The depression and living place(institution) accounted for 16.9% of the variance in helplessness.
Based on the above results, nurses are able to decrease depression and helplessness of the elderly by developing the health promotion program, improving perceived health status and empowering social interaction of the elderly specifically living at institutions.
