This research is on what differences in students' self-esteem and adaptation to school life are presented according to differences of sex and of attendance at different types of high schools and on how students' self-esteem affects the degree of students' adaptation to school life. The subjects of this research are 303 second-grade high school students located in Chungwon in the Chungiu province. This research includes high schools which have a special purpose such as foreign language high schools, science high schools, and art high schools, ones that educate students to enter the universities and ones that train students to be engineers.
The questionnaires are distributed for the purpose of achieving educational adjustment by analyzing differences in self-esteem and adaptation to school life shown according to the differences of sex and attendance at specialized high schools and to measure how self-esteem affects the degree of adaptation to school life.
The questionnaire used in this research is In-sup Song's (1998) which translated Coopersmith's "Self-esteem Inventory (1967)" to analyze students' self-esteem. To analyze the adaptation to school life, this research uses U-sik Moon's measurement of adaptation to school life (2002).
To analyze differences in students' selfesteem and their adaptation to school life according to the difference of sex and attendance at different types of high schools, two-way analysis of variance is used and to analyze the difference of the degree of adaptation behavior to school life, the analysis of covariance is used.
The summary of this research is as follows:
First, the result of the two-way analysis of variance to analyze students' self-esteem shown according to the difference of sex and of high schools is statistically significant for the main effect presented according to the different types of high schools.
Second, the result of the two-way analysis of variance to analyze the difference of the degree of adaptation behavior to school life according to the difference of sex and of high schools is statistically significant for the main effect presented according to the different types of high schools.
Third, the result of the analysis of covariance to analyze the difference of the degree of adaptation to school life based on students' self-esteem according to the difference of sex and of high schools is statistically meaningful on the effect of self-esteem and the main effect of types of high schools and the interaction effect of sex and different types of high schools is shown.
The result of the score of social adaptation behavior, which is a sub-factor, has no effect on the differences of sex and the type of high school regardless of which is the covariance, the effect of self-esteem is statistically significant.
