For examining the health conditions and life satisfaction of grandparents, this study selected the grandparents with experiences in bringing up the grandchildren and without those experiences as the subjects. Through the analysis on them, this study aims to provide the basic data to improve the understanding on the grandparents.
500 aged over 65 in Chungju were selected and their health conditions and life satisfaction according to the bringing-up of grandchildren were examined. The health conditions were largely classified into two fields among 8 fields derived from SF-12; physical health and mental health.
Firstly, in the measurement on the physical conditions of grandparents according to the bringing-up of grandchildren, most subjects were found to be generally healthy, whether to bring up or not. And the restriction in performing the activities due to the physical problems, the physical pains and problems related to the physical functions got higher response scores in that order. And it was found that both groups(subjects with experience in bringing up the grandchildren and those with no experience) didn't illustrate the statistically significant differences in the physical conditions. Four types of physical conditions were identified not to be statistically significant depending on the fact that they brought up or didn't bring up the grandchildren. In accordance with the comparison on the physical conditions by demographic characteristic, the comparison by gender suggested the statistical differences in four types.
With the analysis on the mental condition, both groups had no statistical differences. In the comparison on the physical conditions by demographic characteristic, the physical conditions by gender demonstrated the statistical differences in two types and that by age only one type.
Secondly, with the results on the life satisfaction according to the bringing-up of grandchildren, it was identified that the average life satisfaction of respondents was on the generally recognized level. The results were analyzed by the status whether to bring up the grandchildren or not. The respondents who had no experiences in bringing up the grandchildren showed higher life satisfaction than those who experienced in bringing up the grandchildren. According to the t-test analysis on whether the mean value of both groups was statistically significant, it was observed that the mean value difference of both groups on the life satisfaction was statistically significant.
In accordance with the analysis on the differences of life satisfaction of the grandparents with experience in bringing up the grandchildren and without experience by age, it was identified that the life satisfaction became higher as the subjects were older. The mean values of both groups had the statistical significance. In other words, as becoming older, the aged tended to fulfill their life satisfaction that they felt excluded from the society from bringing up their grandchildren. In other words, as becoming older, the aged tended to fulfill their life satisfaction that they felt excluded from the society from bringing up their grandchildren. Moreover, the life satisfaction of the aged in the rural area was higher than that of the aged in the urban area. Such a difference of mean values between both groups was found to be statistically significant. The analysis results above suggested that as being older, the aged fulfilled their emotion of the meaningless of life caused from the reducing social activities by replacing the social activities with the bringing-up of grandchildren.
On the basis of the analysis on the health condition and life satisfaction of grandparents depending on the bringing up of grandchildren, this study proposes the followings related to the policy and practices of social welfare for improving the elders' welfare.
Firstly, for systematically providing the services required by the aged who have diverse and complicated problems through the implementation of the cooperative relations with elders' welfare service organizations and qualitative improvement of child care facilities in the scope of social welfare policies, it is necessary to implement the links and cooperative relations between the service providers.
For the grandparents who inevitably need to take care of their grandchildren, the policy of social welfare needs to consider the specific group "grandparents who take care of grandchildren" in the institutional aspect of social welfare.
Secondly, for the practical scope of social welfare, it is important to reduce the burdens caused by bringing up the grandchildren by appropriately using the available resources in order to enable the grandparents to faithfully carry out their roles as grandparents.
