Stress is inevitable in sports situations as well as in ordinary daily activities.
This stress is generated through such diverse sources as physical, physiological,
social and psychological conditions, and it is more likely to play a negative role in
sports performance. The purpose of this study is i) to examine various sources of
stress that affect sports referees, ii) to develop a standard scale to measure the
stress, iii) to examine factorial validities & reliabilities, and iv) to investigate
whether there is a significant difference in stress depending on kinds of sports,
age of the referees and levels of the referees. This study consists of two parts:
Study I and Study II.
Study I covers 227 referees of individual sports e.g., Taekwondo, Judo,
Gymnastic, Boxing, Seilum and 340 referees of group sports e.g., Football,
Basketball, volleyball, handball, Fieldhock, Rubby, Baseball who are officially
registered in various sports organizations in Korea. As a pilot study, an
open-ended questionnaire was administered to 90 referees that asks sources of
stress they encounter when they officiate games or after games, which yielded a
comprehensive list of stressors. Based on that questionnaire procedure, 10 specific
domains and five general domains were extracted, and a total of 43 questions
were drawn with a help of a test expert. After this preliminary list of
stressor-related questions, subject was tested twice by 286 referees for validity, a
final list of 20 questions was completed. Finally, a confirmatory factor analysis
produced a Stress Scale that consists of six sub-factors of stress and 20 items.
The six stressors are: false decision, protest by players, bribery, physical burden,
luck of time for family, and unfair allocation of referees.
Based on the Stress Scale developed in Study I, Study II investigated if there is
any differences among types of sports, referees' age, and their professional levels
in those six subscales. For this purpose such statistical techniques were utilized as MANOVA, Univariate analysis, Discriminal Funtion Aanalysis, and Structure Matrix.
Major findings are: i) there was no significant difference between six
sub-stressors and referees' age or professional levels, but ii) there was a
significant difference with respect to the kinds of sports that referees are engaged
in. Specifically, physical burden and protest by players turned out to be major
factors.
The current study will be appropriately complemented by future studies that will
address the problem of separately designing a stress scale for referees of
individual sports and team sports. In addition, those studies are in order that
provide reference points for measuring stress intensity and that discuss such
balancing variables as personality, confidence, and mental concentration capabilities,
that can help reduce the referee stress.
