This study set out to identify how aroma therapy with lavender oil would influence stress and depression of middle-aged women.
The study design was the pre-experimental design with the experimental group, the control group, and pre-and post-surveys, in which stress and depression were compared before and after the experiment. Data were collected from 40 middle-aged women in Daejeon Metropolitan City, who subjectively complained about their stress and depression, from July 14th to September 30th of 2004.
To apply aroma therapy with lavender oil, the method of this study was to let the participants wear the necklace filled with lavender oil from one o'clock and put one drop or two of lavender oil on their pillow or bedding instead of the necklace before sleeping, which continued for a week. During the period of this experiment, the researcher called them to check and cheer them up over the phone.
The measure used for this study was the translation of Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale(1995) by Shin Seok-cheol. To measure their level of stress, used was the 45-item questionnaire of the Psychological Well-being Index(PWI) that was modified and supplemented according to the conditions of our country(The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 1993) on the basis of Godberg's GHQ-60, which is used as the indicator of mental and social well-being level.
The data analysis for this study went through the process as below:
The followings are the specific positive analysis methods used here:
First, to investigate the general conditions of participants from each group, crosstabulation analysis was used.
Second, to inspect credibility for the characteristics of participants' depression and stress, the level of credibility was analyzed.
Third, to investigate the difference in their characteristics of depression and their reactions to stress after aroma therapy, t-test was used and analyzed.
Fourth, to investigate the reactions of participants after aroma therapy the frequency analysis was conducted.
The above statistic analyses were inspected in p<.05, p<.01 and p<.001. For the process of statistics, SPSS WIN 11.0 program was used and analyzed.
The results of this study were as follows:
Hypothesis No.1: It was supported that Middle-aged women's depression will be more relaxed after the application of aroma therapy with lavender oil than before.
Hypothesis No.2: It was supported that Middle-aged women's fatigue will be more reduced when the fragrance of lavender was used.
Hypothesis No.3: It was supported that Middle-aged women's feeling of helplessness will be more reduced when the fragrance of lavender was used.
Hypothesis No.4: It was supported that Middle-aged women's self-aware stress will be more relaxed when the fragrance of lavender was used.
As the result of it, for middle-aged women who complain about stress and depression, aroma therapy with lavender oil presented significant differences in the questionnaire survey on subjective stress and depression. Though there was no huge change, it showed progress. Therefore, it may have a small but positive effect on relaxing stress and depression.
