The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the reality of women's human, social, and psychological capitals quantitatively, explore gender's difference of each capital level and identify some factors including gender which have influence on the capitals. For that purpose, first of all, a literature review was carried out and a theoretical framework was constructed. Based on the framework, a questionnaire survey was designed and implemented from May 17, 2004 to May 22, 2004, focusing mainly on Daejeon Metropolitan City residents. We distributed 400 questionnaire sheets and collected 387 out of them, and used 369 for a final analysis after removing 18 insincere ones. The final data were processed for t-test, F-test, regression and correlation analysis by means of SAS package.
The survey results and implications are as follows.
First of all, the result shows that the level of men's human capital is higher than women's. In spite of several disadvantages to women for increasing human capital, a consistent concerns and institutional efforts on the part of local government should be made.
Second, it appears that women have higher levels of almost all social capital factors than men. It implies that women have a higher potential for participation and cooperation to solve community problem. Therefore we need to create and provide more opportunity for women to participate and take advantage of their strength related social capital for community development. More specifically, it is quite desirable to activate community small group meeting for volunteering, environmental watching, etc, and take advantage of community center to induce the women's participation and make an experiment on their empowerment.
Third, the result also shows that women's levels of psychological capital factors are generally higher than men's. Considering the close relationship between psychological capital and individual development and ultimately social development, it is very encouraging to utilize the female human resources more positively for competitiveness.
The regional competitiveness of the 21st century depends on the quality of human resource. In this context, the regional development is closely related to the utilization of female human resource in which we can find very affluent psychological as well as social capital. It is not only important to provide more opportunity for women to participate in economic activity, but to encourage women to engage in community activity, to experience empowerment and to become a main force to solve community problems.
