A Human being pursues boundless world but has structural contradiction that human being cannot leave real world. Literature which reveals man's value is also created in that contradictory logic. Then, Literary work created in the contradictory logic is an organism containing a complex and multiple system.
Literature is not straight description of man's ordinary life but description that is recreated in author's imagination. Therefore we can experience author's thinking and literary attainment directly or indirectly Through these steps, useful value of literature is created. Literature is also created by man's mental operation. We cannot devide man's operation as mental or physical. If the operation was split, literature belongs to a mental operation. In 20th century, especially post-Freud, authors have written about 'unconsciousness' so often that we can see people has had more interest in mental operation.
Literary interest on man's unconsciousness has focused on problem of self-investigation. As a result of authors' focusing on self-investigation, many techniques and author's thinking were created. This study confirms man's unconsciousness and self-consciousness described in Korean literature through Lee Sang's poetry and novels written in 1930s. We can easily figure out character of Lee Sang's literature because of his abnormal writing habits. He used numbers, symbols and modification ,and broke traditional rhythm and spacing in his works. Lee Sang used 'mirror' to look for and examine Ego. He, also, expanded reversed life through his 'wife' Lee Sang's works are the results of effort trying to unify two extremes. In order to unify two extremes, he formed his works using radical experimentalism and denied formal wording as well.
This study highlights intrinsic of Lee Sang's literature and reconsiders former comment on his works through finding out not only trend of conflict and unconsciousness but also technique of mentalism, forming his works. Passing unfortunate 1930, Lee Sang formed his works out of confrontation of images. In order to draw unconscious fantasy out of works, Lee Sang used outer confrontation in his works including 'Ogamdo(오감도)'. In his poet, surrealism technique that was created for way of surpassing present was presented to describe sprite of liberty and transcendence. Lee Sang's poetry is a record of surrealist's dream and presents resistance to real world.
Fiction is the reflection of human's life. Human life is basically related with the question of time. Beginning in the 20th century, this question of time could make the new conceptional fiction of the psychological fiction. Psychological fiction with the question of time accompanies the technical problem that differs from the classical prose. Its premise is that of the inner consciousness and its style rests on interior monologues, stream of consciousness, montage, paradox and satire.
Lee Sang was a psychological novelist whose work dealt with the Japanese Colonial period 1930's. This is related with a home environment and a health condition.
Love is the most important meaning of the Lee Sang literature. Love in Lee Sang's literature tries to embrace not only erotic love but also the love about neighbor and the real sickness of contemporaneity. Through his characters, he spoke out against colonialism and Capitalism's contradictions.
Lee Sang's novels are temporally and spatially constricted. The stories jump back and forth in time 「JiJuHoiSi(지주회시)』 and 「SilHwa(실화)」. This as a result of the clear consciousness of time can prove that Lee Sang considered the novel is not expressional means but investigative ones. The space of Lee Sang's novel also show the confined condition appearance. The characters in Lee Sang's novel are limited to single room where is isolated from the reality. The characters beautify 'the sleep' as the ideal amusement to escape from the pressure of time and space. Sleep is representative of vegetative semi-sleep state.; it describes an aspect of a dramatic ego's gloomy interior mind and protagonist's senses become almost ruined.
Death in Lee Sang's novel is also one of the important motives with love. This is concerned with the health problem of his tuberculosis and economical breakdown. The more his protagonists repeatedly try to extinct the consciousness, the more they only confirm the desperate state of themselves. The continual temptation of suicide in her literature is a kind of ideal amusement and a paradox to aspire to life. Therefore a tragical self-affirmation as a death-consciousness may considerably achieve the beauty of tragedy in spite of the cynical element in his work.
The characters in Lee Sang's novel have the autobiographical element very strongly. Lee Sang vaguely describes the relation between fictitious ego and the author In his works 「Nilgai(날개)」, 「JiJuHoiSi(지주회시)」, 「BolByulGi(봉별기)」, 「HilHwa(실화)」. This is the device to show his condition of life to the readers intentionally. Like Proust, Lee Sang avails himself of actual experiences to dramatize fictionalized worlds with the device that makes the ambiguous relation between the autography and the fiction. Therefore this should be regarded as the work to objectify the private secret of the psychological fiction's characteristics.
Lee Sang destroys the received notion of the id as a solid unity, and goes on to shatter it into any number of temporal fragments. He can be the first writer to reflect perfectly time as the substance of existence into the novels. And in point of Korean literary circle began to create and study the psychological fiction with self-analysis from Lee Sang's concept, Lee Sang can be evaluated as the representative writer to pioneer the new ground.
