The purpose of this study was the standardization of dyeing condition using cochineal dyes, various mordants and pH values and studying the effect of dyeing conditions for Cotton and Wool fabrics.
For analyzing, the dyed fabrics with Cochineal was measured the values of H V/C by Munsell system. The values was converted H V/C into the object color name by AS A 0011 . Also, for the accurate comparison, the dyed fabrics were measured L*, a*, b* values by Hunter system, color difference ΔE, λmax and K/S values by Computer Color Matching System.
The main results were as follows:
1. The maximum K/S value was measured at pH4 for Cotton and Wool fabrics. Above the pH6, the K/S value was considerable decreased.
2. The color change of wool fabrics by lowering of pH value exhibited P→RP or RP→R. However, because the variation of color tone was so narrow, it was difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. On the other hand, the color change by mordants was distinct.
3. The tone of color by mordants was changed to colokwise direction on Hue circle by Munsell. Dyed wool fabrics were changed the following order, Fe→Cu→Al→None-mordant→Sn→Cr and cotton fabrics were changed the following order, Fe→Cu→Cr→Al→Sn→Non-mordant..
4. The color difference of wool fabrics on Hue circle by Munsell was the lowest with Al-mordant and the highest with Fe-mordant.
5. Generally, dyed fabrics were showed the following result :
The lower the pH value, both K/S value and Chroma value were the higher. Also the higher pH value, both K/S value and Chroma were decreased.
