The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of integrated meditation training on attention and emotional intelligence among fourth graders in elementary school.
For that purpose, the following hypotheses were formulated:
First, students who are exposed to integrated meditation training might improve in attention.
Second, students who are exposed to integrated meditation training might have a better emotional quotient.
The subjects in this study were 36 students in their fourth year of elementary school, who were all selected as experimental group members. The group underwent integrated meditation training 36 times for 20 minutes each, and pretest and posttest were implemented. The instrument used to gauge attention was Korea Psychology & Education Research Institute's grid, and Mun Yong-rin(1997)'s emotional quotient test was additionally employed. For data processing, SPSS/win program was utilized, and paired t-test was conducted.
The findings of this study could be described as below:
1. The fourth graders who underwent integrated meditation training made a progress in attention.
2. The fourth graders who experienced integrated meditation training had a better emotional quotient than before.
There are some suggestions in association with the findings of this study:
The meditation training geared toward enhancing attention and emotional intelligence was applied only to the fourth graders in elementary school, but future research efforts need to investigate how younger students will be affected by other types of meditation training programs during a different period of time.
As meditation brings delicate changes to emotion, emotional change should be measured in a more precise and appropriate manner. The integrated meditation training was found to be effective for the development of attention and emotional intelligence, and how that will give an impact on academic learning area should carefully be studied.
Besides, how student's everyday life will be influenced by integrated meditation training should be considered as well on a long-term basis, and a comparative analysis between experimental and control groups is called for, since only an experimental group was selected in this study.
