This study aims to improve elementary school students basic physical strength, specify the effects of the physical strengthening through game-centered exer cises, and apply those results as a resource for improving physical strength.
For the study, seventy-two male and female students from two classes in 6th grade attending K elementary school, in Andong, Kyounbuk province, were randomly sampled. The test group received physical strengthening through game-centered exercises and the control group received warming-up, gymnastic exercises for twelve weeks.
The measuring events were the standing broad jump measuring the instantaneous force of muscle, situps measuring muscular and sustaining power, 50m running measuring speed, horizontal stretching measuring flexibility, and 1,000m running and walking measuring sustaining power. From these measurements, the results of the pretest between groups, the pretest and the posttest by grouping, and the posttest between groups are as follows.
1) Results of the pretest between groups
The results of the pretest between groups for the standing broad jump, situps, 50m running, horizontal stretching, and 1,000m running and walking showed no significant difference (p>.05). So the same level between the two groups was resulted.
2) Results of the pretest and posttest by grouping
The results for the standing broad jump, situps, horizontal stretching were ^(**)p<.01 for each male and female. The test group, in which the physical strengthening through game-centered exercises, showed a significant difference with ^(**)p<.01 for male students and ^(*)p<.05 for female students in 1,000m running and walking. However there was no significant difference in improving instantaneous force of muscle.
3) Result of the posttest between groups
The results for standing broad jump showed significant difference with **p<.01(males), but it didn't show any difference with p>.05(females). The situp test showed a significant difference with **p<.01 for males and *p<.05 for females. 50m running didn't show any significant difference as the result for both males and females, was *p>.05. The horizontal stretching showed a significant difference with *p<.05 for both males and females. The 1,000m running and walking test showed a significant difference of **p<.01 for males, *p<.05 for females.
When physical strengthening through game-centered exercises was applied to 6th grade elementary school students, it resulted in more positive effects in improving physical strength, than groups who performed gymnastic exercises for physical strengthening. Game-centered exercises were effective in promptness, muscular and sustaining power, flexibility, and whole body sustaining power. They were measured through a pretest and a posttest in groups, and a posttest between groups. However physical strengthening exercise wasn't effective in improving instantaneous force of muscle.
