Nowadays, the development of scientific technology and the sharp economic growth of our country have led to whole changes in our life style as well as the quality of our life. Also, a variety of types of culture require continuous change in our life. Modern people are facing the problem of the uses of leisure by increased leisure hours with economic improvement. Therefore, to solve such problem in modern society where people are lack of physical activity and humanity, great changes in their interest and recognition are required so that they can broadly understand culture and art according to their development and directly experience them for pursuing beauty.
Coping with such needs of the times, ballet removes a physical, mental and sociocultural sense of loss from adults as a field of life-long education, and fully serves as an excellent means for the uses of leisure. However, adults’ participation in ballet class is actually low due to lack of correct understanding and recognition of ballet. Thus this study was attempted to look into the actual condition of ballet instruction for adults in private dancing institutes and suggest a theoretical ground to activate it through literature review and investigation.
For investigation, questionnaire was conducted for 150 adults who participate in ballet class in private dancing institutes on the general characteristics, interest in ballet, satisfaction with ballet class, demand and other requirements of attendants. Frequency analysis, Chi square test, t-test and reliability analysis were performed using SAS 8.0(Statistical Analysis System) for 132 questionnaires with completely marked answers, among the 138 collected questionnaires.
Based on the above-mentioned background, findings of this study are suggested in the following:
First, regarding a general characteristic of adults who attend ballet instruction, they are mostly in their mid-twenties and females, and have learnt ballet.
Second, with respect to their interest in ballet, many of them have viewed ballet performances, and hope to recommend ballet performances to their acquaintances and look into ballet - that is to say, they are highly interested in ballet.
Third, in regard to their satisfaction with ballet class, most of them answered that ballet would establish a right posture, improve flexibility, rhythmical senses, and originality, and produce cultural and artistic interest. Also, they answered that they would learn it continuously and invite their acquaintances or children to learn it. These facts imply that they are much interested in the instructional effects of ballet instruction in terms of substance. However, class is not actually organized by levels, so it shall be reorganized.
Fourth, in respect of the hours and the number of attendants at ballet class, mostly the former is 90 minutes and weekly two times, and the latter is 5~10. No significant difference was found in their satisfaction with and demand for ballet class by factors.
According to the aforesaid findings, for quality improvement of ballet instruction for adults in private dancing institutes, step-by-step classes and programs shall be opened and developed in consideration of their levels as well as the unique artistic value of ballet. Also, instructional methods of ballet instructors as well as instructional environment shall be improved to make participants learn ballet in a further comfortable manner.
