The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and career maturity of middle and high school students. In other words, this study tried to reveal the relationship which showed differences by sexes, schools, regions, grades, academic backgrounds, economic levels, and vocations of their parents.
The research questions are as follows. First, how does self-efficacy differ according to background factors of adolescents? Second, how does career maturity differ according to those background factors? Finally, how self-efficacy and career maturity are related to each other?
To investigate the above hypothesis, 369 middle and high school students in small towns and rural communities, Jeonbuk province, were sampled. They answered Questionnaire by Sherer & Maddus(1982), Jeong Tak-hee's Self-efficacy Criteria(1987) and Crites' Career Maturity Inventory(1978, CMI). CMI is composed of two areas, attitude and ability, but in this study Kim Hyun-ok's(1989) method was rearranged in terms of attitude. In order to test this research, t-Test, one-way ANOVA(analysis of variance) and correlation analysis were employed.
Followings are the major findings of this study. First, the high rank students had the high self-efficacy. According to the sub-variables, boys' were higher than girls', an the self-efficacy of academic high school students show higher correlation than that of vocational high school students. It was higher in small towns than countries, and it got higher according father's high academic background. Also the students whose mother was administrative professional expert had high correlation to self-efficacy.
Second, the career maturity of high rank students was generally higher than that of low rall students. In sub-variables, girls' maturity showed higher relation than boys'. And also it was higher in middle school students than high school students. The test showed the lower class students' maturity was rather high.
Last, the students who had high self-efficacy showed high career maturity.
The above results indicate that it is very important to raise the self-efficacy of students for their high career maturity. Therefore, we should try to raise the self-efficacy of students both at home and school. Besides, many effective programs must be developed for the improvement of their self-efficacy and operated. Thus we should help them have desirable career sense through establishing proper self-understanding and values.
