The purpose of this study is to research on how the types of parents' communication were perceived by the adolescents and how the psychological adaptation (self-esteem / depression) of the adolescents according to the communication between parents and children would appear. This study classified the types of parents' communication on the basis of Satir's theory of family therapy of communication, and divided the psychological adaptation of the adolescents in self-esteem and depression. The research data were collected during April 6 22, 2004, from 399 male and female high school students in Jeonju-si by using the self-administered questionnaires.
The major results of this study were as follows.
First, the efficiency of communication between parents and children showed a higher efficiency with mother than father. And, the difference in the sufficiency of communication between parents and children showed a higher sufficiency with father than mother.
Second, the types of parents' communication perceived by the adolescents and the communication between parents and children showed difference according to the general characteristics (gender, school, academic backgrounds of parents and occupations of parents) of the students surveyed.
Third, as far as the difference of the types of parents' communication and the psychological adaptation is concerned, the harmonization of the type of parents' communication showed the highest self-esteem and the lowest depression. And, the psychological adaptation of the adolescents according to the communication time with parents showed the highest self-esteem and the lowest depression when the communication time with parents was longer than 1 hour.
Fourth, the static correlation appeared in the relationship of the efficiency of communication between parents and children and the psychological adaptation of the adolescents. That is, self-esteem was high and depression was low as the parents communicate efficiently. The psychological adaptation of the youth children according to the communication satisfaction of parents and efficiency of communication showed the static correlation. That is, the more the adolescents satisfy with parents' communication, the higher self-esteem and the lower depression. And, the more the adolescents feel sufficiency of parents' communication, the higher self-esteem and the lower depression.
The difference in the time of communication between parents and children showed that the communication time with father was less than 30 minutes, whereas the communication time with mother was distributed in "less than 30 minutes," "30 minutes to 1 hour," and "more than 1 hour."
