The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the complex problems confronted by post divorced women due to domestic violence and to present ways how they adjust themselves to new circumstances. This study aims to provide basic data on the coping strategies of post divorced women and recommend social service approach about how to help the victims of violence.
The subjects of this study were twelve women who were divorced because of domestic violence. Most of these women lived in a shelter before divorce and some after divorce due to the fact that the shelter provide protection for them. The age range of these women are between 30's and 60's. This study used in-depth interview with the structured interview guide. These post divorced interviewees were from two shelters located in Seoul. The contents of each interview were transcribed and analysed separately, and then compared them together using the constant comparison analysis method.
The findings of the study are as follows :
1. All interviewees suffered from financial crisis and low economic standing. Only three out of twelve had no job experience before divorce. Therefore, after divorce, they found work as unskilled labores for a small pay. Meanwhile, nine interviewees had work experience as skilled workers before divorce. Since they became fully responsible to financial matters they could not wait until they got a job they want. At the same time as ways of getting over these difficulties, they try to receive benefit through public assistance and/or make use of mother-child care center even though it is not easy to access these services.
2. Physical and mental conditions of the interviewees are directly linked to falling economic standing as result of divorce. They usually suffered from much aftereffect like recklining physical health which is because they were battered by their ex-husbands during married life. Some divorced women have experienced social withdrawal.
3. The divorced women free from domestic violence were most often emotionally healthy. However, they experienced frustrations because they could not maintain their marriage. They are still fearful of their ex-husbands who continuously violated them. Although they are more or less stable after divorce, they still experience bouts of loneliness.
4. As time goes by, the divorced women want to satisfy their sexual needs and loneliness. They think ill of their instinctive desire and they believe the they showed withhold it. In addition, the divorced women had a lot of obstacles encountered when trying to date with someone.
5. The divorced women had guilt feelings and yearning for their children because they couldn't bring them up. Only one out of twelve women has lived with her children after divorce. And as working mothers they also worried of their children's future owing to the absence of a father figure.
6. Concerning social relationships, the divorced women have received emotional support more than financial from the women's parents' and their friends. The shelter was helpful to them in recovering their emotional stability. It is reported that the divorced women obtained all sorts of support from the shelter like group and individual counseling, shelter programs, job placement, support group, and so on. These women experienced the bitter social prejudices after divorce from the society, and so they encounter unavoidable hurt failing in certain situations. Most women don't express they are divorced because of these cultural influence and experiences.
7. Divorce was the last choice for having a better life for them. But they have found that they have identified themselves, understood others better, and changed their point of view of the society due to divorce. For the divorced women, divorce is the best solution for them under the violent situations. It is now clear that divorce is never the end of life but the beginning of a more brighter future.
Based on the findings of the study, the researcher developed the following recommendations :
First, the financial problems must be settled without a moments delay to the women in their postdivorce adjustments. They should acquire a prior right of property at the onset of divorce and be protected from further threat of their ex-husbands under the lawful system. Also unequal structure of job opportunity should be changed toward a better condition for the women in labor market. The government and shelters should provide skill-training so that they can find a high-paid job especially those women who had no job experience.
Second, the victims by domestic violence physically and mentally should be furnished free or low-cost medical services and treatment in any government hospital.
Third, there is a necessity to offer emotional counseling to the divorced women. Society should be concerned about them continuously and must help them to respond for a better life.
Fourth, most divorced women want to have a comfortable place to rear their children safely and soundly without facing prejudices, danger, anger and worry. The social welfare system could establish a program for children of divorced women.
Fifth, support group meetings are beneficial to secure their personhood. These meetings are comfortable places or climate, that most divorced women talk openly with one another about coping difficulties and experiences. Sixth, social welfare facilities should open to more people who need help and want counsel regarding divorced experiences.
Finally, we should build up a society without bias concerning these women and accept families without disregard as being divorced or single-mothers.
As a result of this case study, multilateral services for the victims caused by domestic violence such as job placement, counseling, medical service, and so on must be developed and provided. And the services should be operated with structured, social, systematic ways.
