At present, Korea has the concept that a cartoon refers to printed and published one, in particular, one classified as comics. The awareness is narrow in that it prevents a cartoon from developing infinitely, which makes a mistake in interpreting the webtoon newly emerging on the Internet as an alternative for overcoming the recession in a publishing market. Thus, this study aims at anticipating how a webtoon will develop in a multilateral way studying its social meanings by analyzing what genre characteristics it has as a new cartoon phenomenon and what difference it makes from a printed cartoon in meaning appeal modes. And selected and studied was MarineBlues which was most highly recognized among webtoons. The social meanings of the webtoon were studied from the position of studying culture.
The analysis of the webtoon from the position of studying culture indicated that loss of identity induced the phenomena contrary to lifestyle shown in traditional life to be discovered in daily life based on repetition and continuation and present life in post-modern society. It is by means of domination of various selection, pluralized life world, absence of authority, and experience through the media such as the Internet or television that the society defines a life.
Such factors are as they are reflected on this webtoon through the contents, syntagmatic and paradigmatic analyses for it. First of all, the contents analysis deals mainly with a circle of friends of pursuing homogeneous tastes in a story about hobby or daily life, lazy habits in life, and trivial things. Such contents on dailiness and identity show the cultural tendencies shown in post-modern society.
The contents analysis showed that private space was implemented. The syntagmatic analysis for the narrative structure revealed that the daily conflict in the space appeared in the basic narrative structure for solving it voluntarily. A method of solving conflict repeatedly shows the introverted aspect of solving it rather than is expanded to public space or changes the inside. The narrative structure does not reveal the clear and definite object of conflict but is manifested as the form secretly structuralized hidden in daily life.
The paradigmatic analysis of making paradigms sememes derived from the syntagmatic analysis for the narrative structure reached the following three conclusions. First, the aspect of closed and infantile existence creates an individualistic mode of existence of a new concept distinguished from existing individualistic concepts. Secondly, a subgroup has a cultural sense of solidarity through pursuing laziness as negative deviation and codifying a shallow language and enjoys independent dailiness as its own safe mode in it. Thirdly, the values and behavioral modes which are not woven in existing order but provide the meaning of self-identity for a weak will, pursuit of small pleasure, impulsive and unexpected behavior and infantile hobby activities show peculiarity in scrutinizing the behavioral guideline. Unlike the one defined in existing norms, institutions, legal principles, and social relations, personal self-identity should continue to be re-created and redefined in life of modernity, whereas it functions as every element looking dynamic but threatening the habitual mode of existence in daily life.
This analysis showed that in life of modernity personal identity attached importance to an individualistic taste by prioritizing private identity in the provisional opposition of private and public identities. It means that the media mediating between private and public domains or between personal daily and external worlds are more used in proportion to the emotion of modern people who avoid the direct and positive intervention in public domain.
For the genre characteristics of a webtoon related to the question of this study which were seen through MarineBlues, the webtoon reflects the today's situation that self-identity is reduced to private space in inverse proportion to expanded media and defines self-identity through negative deviation in daily life, minimal willful act, and infantile or kidult hobby activities. The behavioral mode is made solidary by a small number of sympathetic individuals, which is expanding its domain to the blog and community on the Internet and even to the webtoon, the object of this study. Meaning appeal mode is to stress private identity so that netizens can sympathize with a webtoon on the space of the Internet. Also, unlike existing printed cartoons a webtoon does not have a narrative structure which is dramatic or contains much information. And the lines are implicit or are expressed centering on nuance, which makes also semantic structure attach importance to space like spatial margin. It can be valuable in that it leaves room for inference so that every individual can make various interpretations with different identities. It becomes a primary factor by which a webtoon can be rapidly spread through netizens on the space of the Internet.
In conclusion, a webtoon has a new mode totally different from that of a printed cartoon. It deals with different contents and implements different forms. In particular, the phenomenon occurring from the traits of the cyberspace of the Internet exposes the great difference that a webtoon has a method of consumption different from that of a printed cartoon. It means that a webtoon entered the temporal and spatial area that the medium of a cartoon has modernity. Thus, it is expected that it will play the role as the area where life politics can be attempted which is called the process of reflective planning presented by Anthony Giddens as an alternative for searching self-identity in daily life of modernity. The possibility can be found in the antiwar relay cartoon as a webtoon which has been performed on the Internet several times since last winter.
The virtues of a cartoon include the element of slight interest. On the one hand, however, when one falls into the element a cartoon can also be reduced to 'a sight' of unproductive, passive and inactive arrangement dominated by unconscious ego tamed by invisible power through the mechanism of education and supervision.
