The purpose of this study was to find the effects of self-determination and regulatory focus on intrinsic motivation. On the base of two self-regulation theory: self-determinant theory and regulatory focus theory, the effects of self-determination and regulatory focus on intrinsic motivation were examined from the experiment. As a result, the author found that there was significant interaction effect of two independent variables on intrinsic motivation.
In this experiment, 85 Undergraduate students enrolled in psychology courses were randomly assigned one of six groups: 3(self-determination level: high / middle / low)x2(regulatory focus: promotion / prevention) completely randomized factorial design. The experimental task was the unusual task to think of different usages of common object. After explaining the cover story, self-determination condition was manipulated by selecting one of task options(high level condition: 5 selectable options, middle level condition: 3 selectable options, low level condition: just one assigned task). After 2 exercise, regulatory focus was manipulated by the opportunity to acquire an additional souvenir, when participants involve in the upper 30% of the creative level in the total participant group(promotion focus), or to lose a given souvenir when they involve in the lower 30%(prevention focus). Dependant variable was intrinsic motivation. It was measured by the time(second) of spending on given task during free choice period(6 min).
The following are the main findings of this study. First, main effect of self-determination was statistically significant, and the hypothesis 1 was partially supported. The intrinsic motivation was significantly higher in the high and middle condition than in the low condition. In between the high and middle condition, however, there was not statistically significant difference. Second, main effect of regulatory focus was statistically significant. Therefore, the hypothesis 2 was supported in that intrinsic motivation in the promotion focus condition was higher than in the prevention focus condition. Finally, the two way interaction effect between self-determination and regulatory focus was statistically significant. As a result, the hypothesis 3-1 and 3-2 were supported in that in the high and middle self-determination level condition, there was significantly higher intrinsic motivation in the promotion focus condition than in prevention focus condition. In contrast, there was not significant difference between promotion focus and prevention focus in the low self-determination level condition.
