This research has been focused on the effects of discussion groups according to learners' introversion/extroversion personality and self-regulated learning strategy(self-report strategy) in problem-based learning.
The research questions of this study were proposed as follows:
1. Is there a significant difference in discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL among introverts group, extroverts group and introverts/extroverts mixed group?
2. Is there a significant difference in discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL between prescribing self-report group and non-prescribing self-report group?
3. Is there an interaction effect on discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL according to introversion/extroversion personality and proscribing the self-report strategy?
To answer these questions, an experiment was conducted with 71 high school students who were in their first year as of 2004 in two classes.
First of all, taking SSI(Student Styles Inventory), they were divided into three groups: introverts group, extroverts group and introverts/extroverts mixed group. And then one class prescribes self-regulated learning strategy(self-report strategy), the other class doesn't prescribe self-regulated learning strategy. To find out their achivement, self-evaluation, personal journal, intermember evaluation, intergroup evaluation, and assesment were utilized to assess learning process.
The results of the research were summarized as follows:
1. There was significant difference in discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL among introverts group, extroverts group and introverts/extroverts mixed group.
2. There was significant difference in discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL between prescribing self-report group and non-prescribing self-report group.
3. There was no significant interaction effect in discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL according to introversion/extroversion personality and proscribing the self-report strategy.
In interpreting these results of the study, it have to be noted that homogeneous group according to introversion/extroversion personality and providing self-report are the critical factors for facilitating discussion's participation and problem solving outcome in PBL.
Suggested future research are include: PBL also needs the study of construction about various learning-strategy and learning group. If the product of the research about self-regulated learning strategy that is studied actively is applied to PBL, we can produce new result.
