The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an EQ program on the emotional quotient and academic achievement of elementary schoolers in a bid to step up their personality development and improve their interpersonal skills and emotional self-control.
The research questions were posed as below:
1. What influence does an EQ program exercise on school children's emotional quotient?
2. What influence does an EQ program exercise on school children's academic achievement?
The subjects in this study were 60 students in their second and third years of elementary school in Seoul, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group with 30 each. Each group included 14 second graders and 16 third graders, and out of the 14 second graders in each group, seven each were boys and girls. Among the third graders in each group, eight each were boys and girls.
The instrument used in this study to assess their emotional quotient was Mun yong-rin(1996)'s EQ Test, which consisted of four different types that were respectively for preschoolers, school children in the first and second year, school children in the third to six year, and middle school students, and the test for school children in the third to sixth year was employed in this study. As for academic achievement, achievement test was prepared by this researcher. Their grades in four subjects including language arts, mathematics, science and social studies were added up and averaged.
The experimental group participated in an EQ program after school 10 times on Mondays from February through April, 2004, and the control group took supplementary enrichment courses. Before the experiment, pretest was implemented, and posttest was conducted in the same way as the pretest one week after the experiment. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/Win 11.0 program, and t-test was utilized to determine the impact of the EQ program on the children's emotional quotient and academic achievement.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the children who was exposed to the EQ program outperformed the others who wasn't in emotional quotient. By EQ subareas, the former excelled the control group in empathy, emotional control and emotional utilization.
Second, the children who participated in the EQ program outdid the others in academic achievement.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that the EQ program had a good effect on enhancing the emotional quotient and academic achievement of the elementary schoolers. Emotional education could teach children to express themselves appropriately, become sensitive to others' feelings and respond to them properly. Furthermore, that could enable them to think better, take advantage of their emotions properly and deliberate on them. In a word, emotional education could make a contribution to facilitating the balanced emotional and cognitive growth of children, and the findings of the study are expected to let people wake up to the importance of emotional education as a vehicle to step up children's cognitive, social and emotional growth, instead of just sticking to knowledge-based education.
