Speakers pick up on their own or other speakers' utterances produced earlier in time and re-use them. They also take and re-use the expressions from books, newspaper articles, television news, drama, movies, etc. This kind of speech production is one aspect of intertextuality which refers to the ways in which texts are related to prior texts. This study examines the intertextuality in conversations and analyzes its functions and linguistic devices. Korean native speakers' spoken texts are analyzed to supply data about natural and authentic language use for Korean language teaching as a foreignsecond language, which can not be encompassed with the intuition of language teachers or material writers. The data are taken from recordings of Korean native speakers' ordinary conversations and television drama scripts. Intertextuality is obtained by taking expressionsinformation from prior texts and using them. Speakers select expressionsinformation from prior texts that are fit to their intentions of communication, which eventually makes the chosen expressionsinformation fundamentally transformed in their meaning and function in a new context. Chosen texts from prior texts(intertexts from now on) consist of three parts: verbal text, nonverbal textparatext, and context of prior texts. Verbal texts refer to linguistic expressions and prosody. Nonverbal texts are gestures, eye contact, vocal cues that accompany language in oral communication, etc. Context means participants of prior texts, and when and where the prior texts took place. In section 3, functions of intertexts in conversations are analyzed. Results show that intertexts function at three levels: macrostructural, microstructural, and strategic levels. In the macrostructural level intertexts have functions that are related to topics of conversations: topic introduction, topic change, topic transition, and topic development. Functions of the last two levels have to do with the intentions of speakers. In the microstructural level, speakers take and re-use expressionsinformation from prior texts to inform partners what was said by whom, and when and where, or to check old information, or to remind partners of what was already said. Intertexts are also used to support speakers' claims, or rebuttal, or reproach, or protest. Lastly, intertexts are strategically used to solve problems. The strategic functions are: (a) to avoid taking responsibility of the truth of the content; (b) to prevent hisher partner's rebuttal or refusal to hisher claim or request; (c) to conjure up things and make them sound like a fact. In section 4, intertext markers are examined. Participants of prior texts are usually marked with subject or indirect object suffixes. Verb or adverbial phrases are used for paratexts, and also used for the time and the place prior texts took place. The ways of taking verbal texts from prior texts are basically divided into two categories: one with markers, the other without markers. Intertextual verbal texts with markers are roughly divided into four subcategories: (a) direct discourse which has the construction of '[verbal text in the original speaker's own words] + speech act verb'; (b) indirect discourse which has the construction of '[transposed verbal text] + speech act verb'; (c) speech act verb or noun as a metalanguage; and (d) hybrid form of (a) and (b). Type (a) and (b) have their subtypes due to the order of verbal texts and speech act verbs. The use of each subtype is described. Lastly it is concluded that intertexts in conversations are not just delivered or reported texts but have various functions. It is also argued that components of intertexts such as participants of prior texts, speech act verbs, and nonverbal texts are not just intertext markers but they themselves play important speaker-oriented intentional roles. Implications of the analysis for Korean language teaching as a foreignsecond language are briefly discussed.
