This study is to analyze the effect of father, mother, and peer attachment on emotional intelligence of middle school students in order to understand the importance of attachment relationship at home and school for the development of emotional intelligence and provide detailed information for broadening the understanding of it. To collect data, the questionnaires regarding father, mother, peer attachment and emotional intelligence were completed by 417 male and female middle school students in Seoul, and the findings from statistical analysis of the responses are in the following.First, the level of father, mother, and peer attachment of middle school students was considerably high, and specifically father attachment was the lowest while mother attachment the highest. As for father attachment, there was no significant difference between sexes, while mother and peer attachment showing a significant difference with the level of female students higher than their counterparts. Concerning the level of father and peer attachment, there was not any significant difference, but mother attachment alone showed a significant difference. Further the score of mother attachment decreased as the grade got higher.Second, the score of emotional intelligence of middle school students were fairly high as well, showing a significant difference by sex. 3 areas of emotional perception and expression, empathy, and ability of emotional knowledge application demonstrated a significant difference with female students’ score being higher. Emotional intelligence was not different according to the grade.Third, the level of father, mother, and peer attachment and emotional intelligence of middle school students showed a highly significant static correlation. Among other things, the correlation between peer attachment and emotional intelligence was the highest. Correlation between father, mother, and peer attachment and emotional intelligence varied significantly by sex. It is notable that correlation between attachment level and emotional intelligence of male students was higher than that of female students. The result of analyzing the scores of emotional intelligence by sex and attachment level implies that the level of mother attachment had a correlative effect on emotional intelligence.This study suggests that father, mother, and peer attachment of middle school students influence the development of emotional intelligence, which is varied by sex and among subcategories. Considering the findings from the study, it is clear that an effective bringing-up and education are essential at home and school in order to improve emotional intelligence, which is used to express numerically the emotional ability of youth. In this regard, the results of this thesis can be used to provide a direction of an effective bringing-up and education for the development of emotional intelligence of youth.
