The purpose of this study was to compare the gender-role identity and self-esteem between the children of broken homes and those of normal homes and thereby, analyze the relationship between gender-role identity and self-esteem, and then, examine the broken home children''s gender-role socialization and psychological adaptation. For this study, the researcher sampled 150 children of normal homes and 147 children of broken homes both of whom were in 5th or 6th grade of an elementary school in Kwangmyung-si, Gyeonggi-do. To measure their gender-role identity, a scale developed by Kim Hae-rae and modified by Ahn Soon (2004) was used. On the other hand, a scale developed by Choi Bo-ga and Jeon Gui-yeon (1993) and modified by Kwon Young-mi (1999) was used to measure children''s self-esteem.The results of this study can be summarized as follows;First, the most conspicuous gender-role identity was undifferentiated type in case of male children, followed by masculinity, androgyny and femininity types in their order, and androgyny type in case of female children followed by femininity, undifferentiated and masculinity types in their order. However, self-esteem was not significantly different in its all sub-areas between two genders.Second, there was found some significant difference of gender-role identity between children of normal homes and those of broken homes. Namely, the ratio of androgyny type was highest in the children of normal homes, while the ratio of undifferentiated type was highest in the children of broken homes. There was found no significant difference of gender-role identity depending on the types of broken homes (father only, mother only, no parents).Third, there was found some significant difference of self-esteem between two groups of children. Children of broken home scored lower in all sub-areas of self-esteem than their counterparts: global self-esteem, social-peer self-esteem, home-parents self-esteem and school-academic self-esteem.Fourth, the results of analyzing children''s self-esteem depending on their gender-role identity can be summed up as follows; Both global self-esteem and social-peer self-esteem were highest in the androgyny type, followed by masculinity, femininity and undifferentiated types in their order, while home-parents self-esteem was highest in the androgyny type, followed by femininity, masculinity and undifferentiated types in their order. There was found no significant difference of school-academic self-esteem among the types. In case of normal home children, global self-esteem and social-peer self-esteem were highest in the androgyny type, followed by masculinity, femininity and undifferentiated types in their order, and home-parents self-esteem was highest in the androgyny type, followed by femininity, masculinity and undifferentiated types in their order. However, there was found no significant difference of school-academic self-esteem among types. In case of broken home children, global self-esteem and social-peer self-esteem were highest in the androgyny type, followed by masculinity, femininity and undifferentiated types in their order, but there were no significant differences of home-parents self-esteem and school-academic self-esteem among the types. In view of the types of broken homes (father only, mother only, no parents), social-peer self-esteem was significantly higher in androgyny and femininity types than masculinity and undifferentiated types in case of the children with fathers only. In case of the children with mothers only, global self-esteem and social-peer self-esteem were highest in the androgyny type, followed by masculinity, femininity and undifferentiated types. In case of the children with no parents, social self-esteem was higher in masculinity, androgyny and femininity types than undifferentiated types.Unlike the preceding studies focused on normal home children only, this study compared normal home and broken home children for their gender-role identity and self-esteem, and thus, confirmed that undifferentiated type accounted for most of the latter group and their self-esteem was low. Furthermore, it was confirmed through this study that self-esteem was high in the androgyny type, while self-esteem differed slightly depending on types of broken homes.
