The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the child-rearing behaviors and involvements of fathers and the stress coping behaviors of children.
The research questions were as follows:
1. Is there any significant difference in fathers' child-rearing behaviors and involvements as a function of social demographic factors?
2. Is there any significant difference in children's stress coping behaviors as a function of social demographic factors?
3. Is there any relationship between child-rearing behaviors and involvements of fathers and stress coping behaviors of children?
4. How much can paternal child-rearing behaviors and involvements explain the stress coping behaviors of children?
The subjects of this study were 405 children of fifth and sixth grade in four different elementary schools located in Seoul and Kyung-gi. Fathers' child-rearing behaviors and involvements were assessed by the 'Fathers' Child-Rearing Behaviors Scale(Choi, 1992)' and the 'Fathers' Child-Rearing Involvements Scale(Choi, 1992)'. They assess four types of child-rearing behaviors and four types of child-rearing involvements ; 'autonomy', 'affection', 'achievement' and 'interest'/'family activities', 'day-to-day guidance', 'household affairs' and 'home education'. Children's stress coping behaviors were assessed by 'Children's Stress Coping Behaviors Scale(Min & Yoo, 1998)'. It assesses five sub-categories of stress coping behaviors; active coping, passive coping, aggressive coping, avoidant coping and social support seeking coping.
The data were analyzed using Cronbach α, frequencies, percentiles, One-Way ANOVAS, Scheff□ tests, Pearson's correlations and multiple regression analyses. In testing all hypotheses, .05 was used in this study.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
1. The significant differences were found in fathers' child-rearing behaviors and involvements as a function of social demographic factors.
2. The significant differences were found in children's stress coping behaviors as a function of social demographic factors.
3. There were significant correlations between paternal child-rearing behaviors and involvements and children's stress coping behaviors. More specifically, fathers' child-rearing behaviors were correlated with children's active, passive, aggressive, avoidant and social support seeking coping behaviors. Paternal child-rearing participations were correlated with all sub-categories of stress coping behaviors except passive coping behaviors. In particular, the relationship between fathers' child-rearing behaviors and involvements and children's stress coping behaviors showed high correlations in the categories of active and social support seeking coping behaviors.
4. The results of the regression analysis for children's stress coping behaviors showed that about 10% of the variance was explained by two variables of fathers' child-rearing behaviors ; 'autonomy', 'achievement', and that about 9.4% of the variance was accounted for by two variables of paternal child-rearing involvements ; 'day-to-day guidance', 'home education'.
