The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting behavior perceived by adolescent and self-perceived competence. The subjects of this study consisted of 576 first grade high school in Seoul and Anseong.
Parenting behavior was assessed by Korean Parenting Inventory developed by Lim(2003) and the SPPC(Self-Perception Profile for Children) developed by Harter(1985) was used to assess adolescents' self-perceived competence. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, Cronbach's, t-test, and Pearson's correlations. In testing all hypotheses, .05 was used as a significant level in this study.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
1. There were significant differences in paternal distrust and respect. And there were significant differences in maternal distrust, respect, lessons, and attention in terms of gender.
2. There were significant differences in scholastic competence and athletic competence in terms of gender.
3. There were significant nagative correlations between paternal distrust and scholastic competence, physical appearance, behavioral conduct, and global self-worth.
4. In other hands, there were significant positive correlations between paternal respect and scholastic competence, social acceptance, physical apperance, behavioral conduct, and global self-worth.
5. Finally, there were significant positive correlations between maternal lessons and scholastic competence, social acceptnace, behavioral conduct, and global self-worth.
