『동물원 이야기』에서 현대인의 소외와 해결 가능성 = (The) aspects of isolation of t :he moderns and its possibility of reconciliation in The Zoo Story

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 변화의 요인들은 과학기술의 발전에 따른 산업화, 찰스 다윈의 진화론, 상대주의 세계관, 프로이드이 심리학과 제 1.2차 세계대전의 발발 등이다. 이러한 것들은 그 동안 현대인들이 절대적이라고 생각한 모든 것들을 부인하고 그러한 상황 속에서 현대인들은 자신들을 이방인처럼 여기게 되었다. 이와같은 부조리한 상황은 이성으로 설명될 수 없기 때문에 현대인들은 정신적인 방황을 겪게 된다. 유진 이오네스코는(Eugene Ionesco) "부조리는 목적의 결여를 의미한다... 자신의 종교적, 형이상학저그 초월적 근간으로부터 단절되었을 때 인간은 상실된 존재가 되며, 그의 모든 행동은 무의미하고, 비합리적이며 무용한 것이 된다." 고 부조리의 의미를 규정하였다.
부조리 극작가들은 연극에서 불합리한 세계, 인간 상태의 무의미와 부적당함을 표현하려고 시도했다. 부조리극은 우리 시대를 가장 진실하게 대표하는 태도의 반영으로 보여질 수 있다. 대표적인 부조리 작가들로는 유럽에서 유진 이오네스코(Eugence Ionesco), 사무엘 베켓(Samuel Beckett), 장 쥬네(Jean Genet), 해롤드 핀터(Herold Pinter), 보리스 비안(Boris Vian). 아더 아다모브(Arther Adamov), 미국에서 에드워드 올비(Edward Albee)가 있다.
에드워드 올비는 미국에서 대표적인 부조리 작가이다. 그가 1959년에 첫 작품 『동물원 이야기』 를 발표한 이후로, 그의 작품들은 많은 논쟁거리를 만들었다. 그의 부조리는 유럽의 것과는 다르다. 유럽 부조리 작가들은 인간의 소외적 현실을 아무런 대안 없이 제시하지만 올바른 인간의 부조리한 상태는 인간 스스로의 노력으로 깰 수 있다는 강한 열망을 보여준다. 그의 부조리는 인간의 갈망과 성취의 불일치가 아니고 현실을 직시해야 하는 인간이 그롯된 가치관과 환상에 사로잡혀서 현실을 착각하고 있기 때문이다. 즉, 현실의 부조리가 아니라 잘못된 환상의 부조리에 더 관심을 가지고 있다.
『동물원 이야기』는 철창에 의해서 고립되고 단절된 사람들의 이야기이다. 본 논문의 목적은 현대인들이 가지고 있는 소외와 그 해결 가능성을 보여 주는 것이다. 먼저 저는 이 극의 두 주인공인 피터와 제리로 대표되는 현대인의 소외현실을 살펴볼 것이다. 피터는 전형적인 중산층으로 조용하고 수동적인 삶을 살고 있다. 그는 그의 가족과 사회로부터 단절되어 있지만 그 사실은 모른다. 반면에 제리는 동물원의 우리에 갇혀진 동물처럼 하숙집에 살고 있는 영원한 방랑자이다. 다음으로 그 소외현실에 각기 다르게 반응하는 두 인물을 분석하고자 한다. 피터와 제리는 둘 다 소외된 사람이지만 피터는 모든 상황에 무관심하고 현실을 무의식적으로 수용하는 사람이다. 그러나 제리는 자신을 둘러싼 삶의 부조리성과 소외를 깨달았기 때문에 다른 사람과 진정한 접촉과 의사소통을 이루려고 시도한다. 마지막으로 피터의 소외를 타파하려는 제리의 노력과 그의 죽음의 의미를 알아볼 것이다. 제리는 피터에게 언어적 접촉과 신체적 접촉을 시도하지만 결국은 죽음이라는 자기 희생으로 피터의 소외를 깨고 피터와 진정한 유대관계를 맺는다.
이 극은 우리에게 현대인의 소외현실을 잘 보여주고 있다. 만약 우리가 계속해서 이와 같은 소외된 삶을 산다면 우리의 삶과 세계는 점점 더 비참해질 것이다. 올비는 이 극에서 인간 소외의 현실은 그 상황을 깨려고 노력하는 진정한 사람의 노력에 의해서 바꿔질 수 있음을 말하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main causes of 20th change were the industialization followed development of science technology, the evolution of theory written by Charles Darwin, the world view of relativity, psychology of Sigmund Freud and outbreak of the first.second world war. These denied all things that human has been thought absolute and given the moderns a mind to feel a stranger. The absurd world could not explain by rationality and the moderns lose their way mentally. Eugence Ionesco defined his understanding of the absurd as follow : Absurd is that which is devoid of purpose... cut off from his religious, metaphysical and transcendental root, man is lost; all his action vecome senceless, absurd, useless.
The dramatist of the absurd attempted to express the irrational world, senselessness of the human condition and inadequacy in the play. The theatre of the Absurd can be seen as the reflection of what seems to be the attitude most genuinely representative of our own time. The main dramatists are Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Herold Pinter, Boris Vian, Arther Adamov, Slawimir Mrozek, Gunter Grass in the Europe, Edward Albee in the America.
Edward Albee is the representative dramatist of absurdity in the America Since he published the first work The Zoo Story in 1959, his works have created many controversies. His absurdity is different from the European's European absurdists who present reality of human alienation without a special alternative. But Albee shows strong desire that tries to break the absurd hwman condition through the hwman efforts. His absurdity does not lie in the discrepancy between the aspiration of the human spirit and the incapacity of the world to satisfy them, but in man's resolute adherence to distraction and illusion in the face of a desperate need to acknowledge reality. Namely, he is not concerned with the absurdity of reality but rather the absurdity of illusion.
The Zoo Story is a story of people who have cut off and isolated by bars. The purpose of this thesis is to show the isolation that moderns are having and its possibility of reconciliation. To begin with, I can see two main characters(Peter and Jerry) on behalf of modern people in the aspects of isolation. Peter is the typical bourgeois who lives a serence and passive life. He has been isolated from his home and society but doesn't know the fact. On the other hand, Jerry is a permanent transient who lives in the rooming-house like an caged animal in the zoo. And then, I want to scrutinize two people in a respectively different response in the alienated situations. Though both Peter and Jerry are isolated men, Peter adapts himself to reality unconsciously and is indifferent to every situation and doesn't know the importance of human relationship each other. But jerry tris to make real contact and communication with others becauses of realizing the isolation and absurdity of his own life. Finally, I will look ino Jerry's efforts to destory Pete's isolation and the meaning of the Jerry's death. Though Jerry tries to help Peter save by the verbal and physical contact, he fails. After Jerry's sacrificial death, Peter is freed from his isolation and realizes the meaning of real human contact.
The Zoo Story informs us of the isolated modems condition. If we continue to live isolated life in our society and world will become tragic. In this play, Edward Albee asserts that the modern's isolated situation can be changed by genuine human efforts aiming to improve it.
