The purpose of this study is to find the affection of self-efficacy and self-esteem on the college life adjustment and to provide supplemental data for counsellor to help college students adjust themselves to the college life.
The research themes of this study are as follows:
First, how are the relationships among self-efficacy, self-esteem, and the college life adjustment? Second, how are the relative affection of self-efficacy and self-esteem on the subordinate factors of the college life adjustment? Third, how are the interactive effects of self-efficacy and self-esteem on the subordinate factors of the college life adjustment?
The subjects of this study are the college students in Seoul and Kyonggi-do areas, and the questionnares answered by 408 students were collected after the sample survey on five universities. The instruments used for this study were the Self-efficacy Scale, the Self-esteem Scale, and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), and the SACQ is composed of academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and institutional attachment.
The data were analyzed statistically using Pearsons relation method, multi-variate regression method, and dual analysis of variance. The results of this study are as follows:
First, there are positive relationships among the self-efficacy, the self-esteem, and the college life adjustment. Second, the affections of self-esteem on social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and institutional attachment are higher than that of the self-efficacy. Especially, the affection of self-esteem on personal-emotional adjustment is relatively higher than others. Third, there was no interactive effect of self-efficacy and self-esteem on the college life adjustment.
The prior research postulated that self-efficacy is similar to self-esteem in concept as personal inner factors. However, this study contrasted the self-efficacy with the self-esteem as different two concepts, and attempted to find the relative affections of these two factors on the college life adjustment.
The results of this study can offer the supplemental data to develop the counselling program in order to help college students improve self-efficacy and perceive self-esteem. The counselling program developed using these study results will be readily applicable to help college students in counselling fields.
