The success of a site in the Internet depends on the establishment and maintenance of the relationships with the customers. Recently, the interest has been directed at building and operating a community in a site. A virtual community can help establish interactive relationships between the company and the customers and among the customers at small costs, as well as promote their customer loyalty by inducing them to commit themselves to the relationship.
Most previous studies on relationship commitment or customer loyalty considered either the sense of a virtual community or the characteristics of a virtual community in measuring their effects on relationship commitment or analyzing the direct impacts on customer loyalty.
In this study, both the sense and characteristics of a virtual community that the community members showed were considered in conducting an empirical research on their effects on relationship commitment and its impacts on their customer loyalty.
As a result, both the sense and characteristics of a virtual community had impacts on the members relationship commitment. The most influential variable was the communication among the members, which was followed by intimacy among the members, common interests, leading membership activities, mutual satisfaction of needs, influence, and the certainty and speed of the contents in the order of importance. And, it turned out that the relationship commitment in the virtual community had significant impacts on the customer loyalty of the community.
This study is meaningful in that it analyzed the factors that the previous studies reported to affect the relationship commitment and customer loyalty of a virtual community, examined if the factors had significant impacts on relationship commitment that would lead to customer loyalty, and provided the implications of each factor.
