This study was intended to evaluate the effects of Social Skills Training Program, which was developed by Government and others (1990), on decreasing in impulsivity and attention-deficits and increasing in self-control and academic achievement of ADHD children.
The Social Skills Training Program covers four social skills such as (1) social entry, (2) conversation skills, (3) conflict resolution and problem solving, (4) anger control in social skills of ADHD children. The Program is composed of 14 sessions(30-40 minutes for a session).
The 20 children of third grade in Pusan showed above 65 T-scores in Conners Teacher Rating SCales were randomly assigned to the experimental and the control group by 10 children each.
The pre-and post-tests were administered as Matching Familiar Figure Test (Kagan, 1960), Self-Control Rating SCales (Kendall & Wilcox, 1979), Conners Teacher, parent Rating SCales(Goyette & Conners, 1978), and academic achievement.
The result of the study are summarized as follows :
(1) The children in the experimental group showed statistically significant decrease in impulsivity than in the control group.
(2) The children in the experimental group showed statistically significant increase in self control than those in the control group.
(3) The children in the experimental group showed statistically significant increase in attention than in the control group.
(4) The children in the experimental group showed statistically significant increase in the academic achievement.
In conclusion, Social Skills Training Program has positive effects on improving Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
