e-Learning, emerged after the development of technology, provides
learner-focused environment which makes the learner participate in
study actively. This new environment of education requires new role
to the existing instructors, and, accordingly, many kind of research
have been made on it. But as previous studies have merely focused on
the instructors perspective, the status regarding study on the role
and performance behavior required to the instructor, which conducted
by the learners perspective, is still unsatisfactory.
Hence, in this study I inferred role and performance behavior
required to the instructor of e-Learning from the learners
perspective. Also, I aimed to find out the importance level based on
the result.
First, I applied Delphi research to infer role and performance
behavior which the learner requires to the instructor of e-Learning.
The subjects for this Delphi research were set as learners either who
have work experience above 2 years in e-Learning business or
current teachers who have experience with ICT application. At the
same time, they were graduate students at S University who have
been studying in the e-Learning environment more than 3 semesters.
Second, to estimate the importance level of role and performance
behavior which the learner requires to the instructor of e-Learning, I
set the subjects as learners who were studying their degree course in
the e-Learning environment.
Throughout this study, I resulted in following conclusions:
First, there are total 9 roles, such as ‘A guide of learning’, ‘A
provider of learning information’, ‘A inductor and maintainer of leaning
motive’, ‘A stimulator of interaction’, ‘An assistant of onlinecommunity’
‘An administrator of learning activity’, ‘an evaluator’, ‘A
subject matter expert’, and ‘An advisor of technical and administrative
support’, as well as according 57 performance behaviors required to
the instructor of e-Learning by the learner group.
Second, the most essential role required to the instructor of e-
Learning by the learner group was ranked as A inductor and
maintainer of learning motive and ‘A guide of learning’, ‘A stimulator
of interaction’, ‘A subject matter expert’ followed, respectively. For
performance behavior, Providing a prompt feedback to the learner’s
inquiry was ranked at the top and ‘Researching and acquiring
education method adapted to the e-Learning environment’, ‘Providing
a feedback to submitted tasks results’ followed, respectively.
The results of this study are meaningful as it clarifies the role and
performance behavior required to the instructor of e-Learning with
the learners perspective not with the instructors. Also, it could be
used as a basic guideline as it suggests what role and behavior of the
instructor is concerned by the learner.
