The purpose of this study was to investigate self-resilience and social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care. The study also tried to identify the protective factors and the risk factors on self-resilience and social adaptability and the relationship between self-resilience and social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care.
The subjects in this study were 148 children and adolescents in institutional care. They completed the survey questionnaire included self-resilience, social adaptability, protective factors(locus of control, parent-child bond, social support), risk factors(depression and anxiety, unsatisfaction of institutional care). Finally 140 respondents of them were analyzed statistically.
The research data were analyzed using Frequency, Pearson's Correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis and T-Test in SPSS WIN program.
The major findings were as follows.
First, self-resilience of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to locus of control, depression and anxiety and unsatisfaction of institutional care. Result of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that depression and anxiety and locus of control in the order had significant effects on self-resilience.
Second, social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to social support and parent-child bond. Unsatisfaction of institutional care and social support in the order had significant effects on social adaptability by stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Third, the children and adolescents who had higher level of self-resilience reported better social adaptability.
The overall research results revealed that the risk factors such as unsatisfaction of institutional care and depression and anxiety than the protective factors had more significant effect on self-resilience and social adaptability of children and adolescents in institutional care.
This finding suggested that elimination of risk factors rather than development of protective factors was more important task for the welfare of children and adolescents in institutional care.
This study had important implication for research, practice and family policy. Quality of institutional care had significant meaning for self-resilence and social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care.
Family life education program and family therapy could help the children and adolescents in institutional care by developing protective factors and eliminating risk factors for strengthening self-resilience and social adaptability. Family policy could play an important role to facilitate institutional services and welfare systems.
