성매매의 고착기제 연구 : 탈성매매여성의 경험을 중심으로 = (A) study on the fixation mechanisms of prostitution : on the basis of the experiences of post-prostitute women

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 성매매피해여성들을 성매매로 고착시키는 기제가 무엇이며 그로 인해 성매매피해여성이 겪는 부정적인 경험은 무엇인지를 밝혀내고 분석 하려는데 목적이 있다.
자료수집을 위해 2000년 1월부터 성매매피해여성 쉼터에서 자원활동을 시작하였고, 2000년 7월부터 2003년 9월까지 성매매지원센터에서 상담원으로 일을 하였다. 탈성매매 한 여성 7명을 대상으로 참여관찰과 심층면접을 실시 하였고, 수집된 자료는 지속적인 비교방법을 활용하여 분석하였다.
본 연구의 연구결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 성매매업소 유입이전의 고착기제로는 성폭력, 가정폭력, 빈곤 등이었다. 성폭력은 여성들이 자신의 몸은 이미 버려졌다고 생각하여 자신을 비하하게 만들고, 자신의 몸이 도구화 된 것에 저항하지 못하여 그 상황을 무기력하게 그냥 받아들이게 만들어 성매매에 유입되는 기제로 작용한다. 가정폭력은 직접적으로 신체에 상해를 입기도 하지만 여성들의 심리적, 정서적인 부분들을 손상시킨다. 그 폭력이 자녀에게로 향하면 그 자녀들 역시 심한 손상을 입는다. 그것은 곳 가출로 이어져 가출한 청소녀들은 돈을 많이 벌 수 있다는 말로 유혹하는 성매매의 덫에 걸려드는 것이다. 빈곤은 빈곤의 악순환이라는 말에서 알 수 있듯이 악순환의 고리를 만들어 교육기회의 제한, 좁은 직업선택의 폭 등으로 성매매로의 유입가능성을 높이는 기제로 작용하고 있다.
둘째 성매매 유입 이후의 고착기제로는 경제적 착취, 폭력과 통제, 정신적 고통, 유착비리 등이었다. 경제적 착취는 성매매업소에서 피해여성들에게 가해지는 소개비, 선불금, 맞보증, 각종 벌금 등으로 성매매피해여성들에게 빚의 고리를 끊을 수 없게 만들어 성매매에서 벗어나기 어렵게 만드는 기제로 작용하고 있다. 폭력과 통제는 업주나 감시하는 폭력배, 성구매자 등에 의해 자행되어지는데 여성들을 무기력하게 만들어 탈성매매를 어렵게 하는 기제로 작용한다. 비인간적이고 지속적으로 행해지는 성매매와 인신매매는 성매매피해여성들에게 정신적인
고통으로 작용하여 탈성매매를 어렵게 만들고, 탈성매매 하였다 하더라도 사회적 적응과 자활을 어렵게 만들고 있었다. 성매매업소 업주와 몇몇 경찰·관련공무원들의 유착비리는 성매매에 종사하는 여성들에 대해 피해자라는 인식부족과 금품수수 등이 이루어져 피해여성들이 탈성매매 하는데 어려움을 주는 기제로 작용하고 있다.
셋째, 성매매 고착기제로 인한 부정적 경험으로는 육체적·정신적·정서적 손상 등이 있었다. 성매매의 고착기제로 성매매피해여성들이 경험하는 육체적 손상은 주로 산부인과계 질환으로 나타나지만 그 외에도 성매매 업소 종사 시 지속적인 폭력과 통제를 당하여 관절염, 요통, 두통, 소화불량, 낙태로 인한 불임, 신체장애 등이 발생한다. 정신적 손상은 지속적인 성매매와 인신매매를 당하면서 여성과 인간으로서의 자존감을 상실하고 정신적 공황상태에 빠져 자살하는 경우도 있고, 우울증, 섭식장애를 보이는 경우도 있다. 정서적 손상으로는 성매매피해여성들은 공공의 성적 대상으로 낙인찍히는데, 우리사회에서 여성이 오직 성적 대상으로 그것도 공공의 성적 대상으로 낙인찍힌다는 것은 인간 이하의 대접을 받는다는 것을 의미한다. 성매매피해여성의 대부분이 탈성매매를 원하고 있지만, 사회적 낙인으로 인한 무기력이나 정체감의 혼란은 그들로 하여금 내적·외적으로 성매매의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못하도록 자포자기하게 만드는 억압의 조건이 된다.
본 연구의 실천적 함의는 사회복지 실천의 장에서 성매매피해여성에 대한 이해를 높이고 성공적인 사회적 적응과 자활을 이룰 수 있도록 원조하는 일에 자료를 제공하려는 데 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purposes of this study are, first, to analysis the fixation mechanisms of prostitution and to identify the negative experiences of the women that affect their social adjustments and independent living in their times of post-prostitution.
In order to gather information and to have a prolonged engagement, the researcher began to work as a volunteer at a shelter for victims of prostitution from January of 2000. The researcher also worked as a counselor at a center for supporting the victims of prostitution from July of 2000 to September of 2003. The researcher did participatory observations and in-depth interviews with seven post-prostitute women and the data were analyzed through a method of constant comparison.
The followings are the results of the study:
First, there were several fixation mechanisms that the women were experiencing before they entered into the market of prostitution. Those are sexual abuse, domestic violence, and poverty, etc. The women tend to devalue themselves because they think that their bodies were contaminated by the sexual abuses that they had experienced. They also tend to think that since they were not able to resist to the powers, the men took advantages of their bodies. Subsequently, it led them to enter into the market of prostitution. In general, domestic violence damages women physically as well as emotionally. Specifically, when violence is toward children, it also can be devastated. The violence is related to the runaways of some adolescents, consequently they are stepping into the market of prostitution because of the temptations that they can make money. As we may know from the existing vicious circle of poverty, the study confirms that poverty works as a mechanism that elevate the possibility of women to prostitute because of the lack of opportunity for them to have good education and subsequent inability to enter into good job markets.
Second, after stepping into the prostitution, they were suffering from the economic exploration, the violence and control, the mental distress, and irrationalities inside the market. Economic exploration has worked as a mechanism for the women to keep prostituting because of the number of fees that the women had to pay for their work places. It made the women to stay and work for the pimps in order to pay their debts. The women also tremendously felt the sense of powerless when they were abused and controlled by the pimps, gangs, and the consumers, usually men. Consequently, it helped the women to be unable to step out the market of prostitution. In addition, the constant and depersonalized prostitutions and the human traffics helped the women not to be able to get out of the situations. Even if they successfully cut the vicious circles, the emotional distress disturbs their social adjustments and independent living. The irrationalities among the pimps, some of the police officers, and related civil servants effectively prohibited people from thinking that the women are victims. Consequently, it helped the women to not give up prostitution.
Third, there were several negative experiences, which the women had experienced from the fixation mechanisms, such as physical, psychological, and emotional damages. The constant violence and controls on the women caused them to suffer from rheumatism, lumbago, headache, indigestion, sterility from abortion, various obstetric diseases, and physical handicaps, etc. Psychological damages may lead them to attempt suicide, depressions, and eating disorders because of their loss of self-esteem as a woman and even as a human being. The women were often stigmatized as an object only for sex. That means that they were not treating as human beings by this society. Although most of the prostituted women want to get out of their situations, the sense of hopelessness and the identical confusions that they were experiencing from the social stigma, as a form of oppression, forced them to stay in the vicious circle.
