자본의 변화 및 멀티플렉스의 등장이 한국영화산업에 미친 영향에 대한 연구 = (A) study on the effects of changed capital structure and emergence of multi-flex on the film industry in Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 이 연구는 한국 영화산업구조 하에서 자본의 변화와 멀티플렉스의 등장이 한국영화산업에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지에 대해 알아보기 위한 것이다. 이 연구를 위해 한국영화산업의 전체 구조 가운데 특히 대자본의 이동과 멀티플렉스극장의 확장에 대하여 주목하였다. 멀티플렉스의 등장과 현황 및 자본의 거대화와 이에 따른 산업구조 내 배급, 상영체계의 변화를 조사하였고, 이를 통해 멀티플렉스 등장과 대자본의 변화가 가져온 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이 논문의 연구 문제는 다음과 같다.첫째, 영화산업에 관련된 자본의 변화가 국내영화산업의 구조 내에서 배급과 극장사업변화에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는가?둘째, 영화상영관의 증가와 멀티플렉스의 등장이 한국영화제작산업의 성과와는 어떤 관계가 있는가? 영화시장을 산업적인 접근 방법으로 분석하기 위해 매체경제학적인 분석의 틀 가운데 구조․행위․성과의 산업조직모델을 한국영화시장의 분석을 위해 도식적이나마 적용해 보았다. 그리고 제작산업의 구조와 관련된 논의로서 제작, 배급, 상영부문간의 수직적 통합에 대해서, 배급과 상영업에 관하여서는 규모의 경제, 경쟁의 정도 및 동종 기업간의 수직적 통폐합을 논의 대상으로 삼았다. 한국 영화산업구조의 지형도를 시시각각 변화 시키고 있는 국내의 영화관련 회사들의 전략적 제휴 및 합종연횡과 수직․수평적 통합을 사례를 통한 서술적 분석으로 심도 있게 논의하였다. 또한 본 연구는 한국영화시장에서의 산업적 요인 가운데 멀티플렉스의 증가를 포함한 스크린수의 증가 한국영화의 흥행성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는가를 알아보기 위하여 전국의 멀티플렉스 개봉관과 그곳에서 개봉된 한국영화의 관객 수를 조사하였다.그 결과 영화의 제작 및 투자를 위해 집중되었던 과거 대기업 자본들이 빠져 나가고 정부의 문화 산업 육성 정책 하에 창업투자회사 및 투자조합의 결성과 이를 통한 투자가 활성화되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 함께 후발 자본들은 시장규모를 키우면서 안정적인 기반을 쌓고 이를 바탕으로 영화산업에 진입하였다는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 현재 영화산업에 진출한 기업들은 거대한 자본력을 바탕으로 기존회사들의 인수 합병을 통해 사업의 기반을 곤고히 하고 극장사업을 통해 시장의 전체규모를 키우고 수익원을 확보하면서 이를 기반으로 배급과 제작의 영역으로까지 그 사업 영역과 규모를 확대해 나아갔다는 것을 알 수 있었다.한편, 영화산업의 구조적인 변동에 따라 극장사업을 기반으로 수직적 통합을 실현하는 것이 유리하다고 판단한 대자본에 의해 멀티플렉스가 등장하였다. 이는 대기업들의 철저한 산업적 전망과 상업적 손익계산을 바탕으로 선택되고 건설되었다. 멀티플렉스는 국내 영화 배급 및 유통 질서의 선진화를 앞 당겼고 무엇보다 영화 관람객 증가에 크게 기여하였다. 그러한 멀티플렉스의 등장과 증가는 관객의 동원에 공헌함으로써 한국 영화산업을 양적으로 성장시키는 주된 견인차 역할을 했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the changed capital structure and emergenceof multi-flex on nation''s film industry. For this purpose, the researcher paid attention to the flows of large capitals and expansion of the multi-flex theaters in the entire structure of nation''s film industry, and thereby, reviewed the conditions of multi-flex and enlargement of capitals as well as the changes of film distribution and film running system, and thereby, examined the implications of multi-flex and large capitals for our film industry.To this end, the study points were set as follows;First, how did the changed capital structure influence nation''s film industry structure in terms of distribution and theater business?Second, what relations do increased theaters and emergence of multi-flex have with the performances of nation''s film production industry? In order to analyze the film industry from a industrial viewpoint, the researcher attempted to apply a industry organization model of structurebehaviorperformance, one of the media-economic analysis tools to analysis of nation''s film market. On the other hand, this study discusses the structure of film production industry, being focused on the vertical integration of productiondistributionrunning, scale of economy for distribution and film running, competition among film entities, and vertical integration of film entities, and thereupon, describes the strategic alliances, tactical associations and partnerships and verticalhorizontal integration, all of which change the topography of nation''s film industry structure every day. Furthermore, this study surveyed the first-run multi-flex theaters throughout the nation and their box offices in an effort to analyze the increasedscreens including multi-flexes on the successful performances of Korean films. As a result, it was found that large companies'' capitals invested in film production and related activities have escaped from the film markets and instead, the film businesses are financed primarily and more vigorously by the funds from venture capitals and investment associations being promoted by government''s cultural and industrial promotion policies. At the same time, the following capitals attempted to expand their market scale and thereby, consolidate their ground and thereupon, advanced into the film industry. Currently, the companies engaged in the film industry are using the capital power to merge and acquire existing companies only to consolidate their business ground, while advancing into the theater markets only to expand their entire scale of business and increase their profits, and even advancing into the distribution and production sectors to enlarge their business scope and scale. On the other hand, as the structure of the film industry has changed, the large capitals who favored the vertical integration based on theater business launched the multi-flexes. In other words, the large capitals selected and constructed the multi-flexes based on a thorough analysis of the industry and commercial profitloss estimation. Anyway, multi-flexes advanced distribution of domestic films and its order and above all, contributed to increase of the film audience. After all, multi-flexes emerged and grew only to attract more audience and thus, played a major role of engine to grow nation''s film industry.
