Facing fierce global competition in increasingly volatile environments, companies are finding it difficult to survive without close cooperation with other companies. Companies not only have to excel in their own core competencies, but they must also develop close partnership with other companies for integration with the entire "business ecosystem" to which they belong. In fact, supply chain management researchers and practitioners see whole sets or chains of organizations as deliberately collaborating to achieve joint goals in competition with other supply chains.
The objective of this study is to explore the nature of supply chain partnership. More specifically, this study intends to answer the following questions. First, what are the components of supply chain partnership? Second, what are the factors to influence supply chain partnership? Third, is there any relationship between supply chain partnership and SCM performance?
To answer these research questions, we identified the supply chain partnership-related variables from the relevant literature, and then developed a theoretical framework, which consisted of three parts-the determinants of supply chain partnership, the components of supply chain partnership, and SCM performance.
In this dissertation, we focuses on the implementation of supply chain partnership at a more operational level, and conceptualizes supply chain partnership in terms of sentimental components(relationship commitment and trust) and behavioral components(flexible adaptation and collaboration). The conceptual framework identifies strategic fit, interdependence, compatibility, mutual reciprocity, and communication as determinants of supply chain partnership. Furthermore, the model includes SCM performance as expected performance consequences of supply chain partnership.
To empirically test the proposed model, we conducted an e-mail survey. As an analytical method for 159 valid responses, we selected the structural equation modeling method using the LISREL software program.
Based on the statistical analysis, it was found that relationship commitment and trust were significantly related to flexible adaptation and collaboration. In addition, the adaptive and collaborative supply chain partnership had a significant positive influences on the SCM performance. These research findings support the notion that higher levels of supply chain partnership will lead to improved SCM performance.
Moreover, the findings reveal that strategic fit, interdependece, compatibility, and communication will facilitate supply chain partnership. However, the findings did not support the direct impact of strategic fit and interdependece on the trust.
The result of this study have several important implications for SCM researchers and practitioners. First, identifying relationship commitment, trust, flexible adaptation, and collaboration as the components of supply chain partnership is critical to the study and management of SCM. Second, this research identifies the facilitating factors(strategic fit, interdependence, compatibility, and communication) for the implementation of supply chain partnership. Third, the research provides a set of valid and reliable measurements for evaluating an organization's level of SCM performance by benchmarking and comparing SCM performance across different organizations.
