Korean classical music is thc cultural inheritance that has been developed within our lives through our long history.
In order to preserve and develop the valuable inheritance, systematic education on the classical music is needed from the elementary school days. The first and second grade pupil's textbook has a lot of songs to have the students learn the classical music beginning with the acquisition of the beat, as the beat occupics a great portion(importance) in the classical music of elementary school curriculum. A lot of arguments are arising everywhere that classical music be instructed with the taste of the native classical music included, whereas there are no detailed guidelines on how to instruct or what to teach. In many cases, even when it is taught the approach to the classical music based on western viewpoint is prevailed.
Accordingly, in this study I'd like to suggest a systematic and comprehensive way to teach the beat through presenting the notion of 'the beat', analyzing the textbook named 'Joyful Life', thus extracting the leaching elements, drafting the teaching stage and setting teaching step appropriate to the first and second grade pupils. Especially, this study is aimed at searching for the ways to help the first and second grade pupils take part in 'the beating activitles with' pleasure.
As the theoretical background for the study, the first and second grade pupils' history of musical education, musical growth, and musical experience that helps grow the pupil's musical growth were examined. In the importance of Korean classical music and its beat, it was considered along with the musical pedagogists' opinion that racial music not only has its value as the artistic form but it infuses the children with the cultural identify and thrtt musical education should be started through the classical folk music. In addition, in this study the 'beat' in its literal meaning and musical meaning were considered respectively, and the idea 'the beat' from the philosophical view was inspectcd. In instructing the 'beat', the methods-not 'just showing examples and following them methods' but casy and interesting methods appropriate for the first and second grade pupils- have been searchcd.
Firstly, analysis of the 'beat' among textbooks 'Joyful Life' was made. As a result, first grade textbook contained 14 pieces, second grade textbook 11 picces. In the first grade textbook, 11 pieces(78.6%) of 14 pieces were notated with picture scores, while in thec second grade textbook, 4 picces(36.4%) of 11 pieces were notated with picture scores. Some of the pleces in the second grade textbook are somewhat difficult to instruct with the only use of staff notation, so it seems desirable to use the picture scores at the same time. When I inspect the 'beat' in the second grade textbook, it seems to contain insufficient contents for the pupils to experience and practice various kinds of beat, as there are only a few kinds of pieces containing particular kinds of beat.
Secondly, in the 'beat' teaching programs, through the systematic organization of the beat in the textbook, it has been sought how to teach beat through language rhythm activities, physical expression activities, oral sound activitles and instrument playing activities.
Thirdly, to apply this technique, the beat model and teaching-learning curriculum were suggested.
Fourthly, along with the picture scores, systematic checker square scores(first stage pictured checker square scores, second stage symbolized checker square scores) was drafted presented, to mike it possible for the pupils to have visual contacts with the beat.
As stated above, by presenting effective way of instructing the 'beat' according to the first and sccond grade pupils development stage, it would be helpful for the teachers to teach the 'beat' and the students would be able to learn the 'beat' with ease and fun.
