The purpose of this study is to investigate the levels of health teachers' perception for the needs of the handicapped student education as school health task in order to maintain the best heath condition and school environment for the handicapped students in elementary school. The study was performed to provide basic data for the promotion of school health task.
The study was performed with 100 health teachers who participated in the training program of health teachers provided by the D Metropolitan Office of Education on Aug. 19, 2003 and 50 health teachers working at N City. The data were collected from Aug. 10 to Aug. 30, 2003.
To find out the perception and the nursing activity of health teachers for the handicapped student education, the study created a survey for the health teacher's perception on the handicapped student using the tool developed by researcher which was modified from the Suk Jae-Eun(1993) as Likert-type 5-step survey scale. The Cronbach's alpha .97 was used for the perception of health teachers on the school health task and the collected data was analyzed through SPSS/PC.
The findings of this study were as follows :
1. The result showed that the health teachers perceived handicapped students as being in complex handicap situations that include physical, psychological, emotional, and social problems.
2. As for the nursing activities for the handicapped students, 13.2% of the health teachers highly valued in regular health check and 12.8% valued in the investigation on the children. 12.6% said that there should be professional health and medical service and another 12.6% said that health information and education are necessary. Only 12.0%, which was the lowest result, valued in the sanitation of the environment.
3. The average score for the perception of health teachers on the school health task for the needs of handicapped student education was 4.20. item 「Information on educational organization and hospital appropriate for the child's condition」has the highest average score with 4.35 and 「Information on ways to answer other people when they ask the child's condition」has the lowest average score.
4. There was statistically significant difference in 「Information related to ways to explain the handicapped student to other people」(p=.02, p=0.01) according to the size of the class and the school. According to the career as health teachers, there was significant difference in the statistics of「Information on home schooling」(p=0.04),「Information on handicapped child education of educational organization」(p=.02), and 「Information related to ways to explain handicapped child to other people」(p=.03). The statistical difference could be also seen in 「Information on development of handicapped child」item and 「Information related to ways to explain handicapped child to other people」(p=.01) according to the teachers experience with handicapped students. There was also statistically significant difference in 「Information on development of handicapped child」(p=.02) and 「Information on handicapped student education of educational organization」(p=.03). Finally, there was statistically significant difference in 「Information on service of local society」(p=.03) according to the nursing activities for the handicapped child.
In conclusion, this study revealed that health teachers perception on school health task for handicapped student education was high level relatively and development of systematic health program for handicapped student education was demanded which was fitted to practical affairs.
