The school is a place where teachers and students interact with each other through teaching and learning. In the class, teachers play the key role of education, and particularly they are perceived as important persons by children at school age. Accordingly, how students perceive, interpret and receive teachers' behaviors have a great influence on their development.
The present study purposed to examine how children perceive teachers' behaviors based on the theory of teacher expectation (교사기대이론) related to interaction between teachers and students in the school class, and to understand the relationship of teachers' behaviors and students' perception on the behaviors with the students' affective domain and cognitive domain, namely, their self-esteem and academic achievement.
For these purposes, this study formulated the following research questions.
First, how different is students' perception on teachers' behavior according to students' background factors, which are gender, school year and place of residence.
Second, what factors do students perceive as the causes of difference in teachers' behaviors?
Third, in what relationship are teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' self-esteem?
Fourth, in what relationship are teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' academic achievement?
To answer these questions, the researcher selected 573 students through random sampling from fourth- and sixth-year students at six elementary schools in Chuncheon-si, Wonju-si, Yanggu-gun and Hwacheon-gun.
Key variables handled in this study were students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' self-esteem and academic achievement. To measure these variables, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on students' perception of teachers' expected behaviors and students' self-esteem. Teachers' behaviors mean supportive behavior, negative feedback, teaching activity (question & answer situation), and teachers' expectative behavior. self-esteem is sub-divided into general self-esteem, social self-esteem and school (academic) self-esteem. Survey questions were on a scale of 5 points. Academic achievement was evaluated based on the scores of Korean, Mathematics, Social Study and Science in the first semester of the 2003 school year.
Data were processed using SPSS. As for specific statistic methods, Variate analysis was used to determine whether students' perception on teachers' behaviors is different according to students' gender, school year and place of residence. Cross analysis (χ^(2)) was used to determine whether students perceive factors that cause difference in teachers' behaviors differently according to school year, gender and place of residence. In addition, correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the relationship of teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' self-esteem and academic achievement.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, students' perception on teachers' behaviors was different according to gender (F=19.26, p=.000), school year (F=14.98, p=.000) and place of residence (F=5.24, p=.022). Female students appreciated teachers' behaviors more highly than male ones did, fourth-year students than sixth-year ones, and students in towns and villages than those in cities.
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' supportive behaviors was statistically significant only according to school year (F=14.40, p=.000). The degree was 22.01 points for sixth-year students and 24.00 points for fourth-year ones. Thus, fourth-year students perceived teachers' supportive behaviors more than sixth-year ones did.
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' negative feedback was statistically significant according to gender (F=59.67, p=.000) and place of residence (F=17.85, p=.000). By gender female students (17.49 points) perceived teachers' negative feedback more than male ones (15.52 points) did, and by the place of resident students in cities (16.98 points) more than those in towns and villages (15.91 points).
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' teaching activity (question and answer) was statistically significant according to gender (F=26.44, p=.000) and school year (F=31.92, p=.000). By gender female students (30.98 points) perceived teachers' teaching activity (question and answer) more than male ones (29.06 points) did, and by school year fourth-year students (30.94 points) more than sixth-year students (28.92 points).
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors was statistically significant according to gender (F=4.71, p=.030) and place of residence (F=4.54, p=.034). By gender female students (27.20 points) perceived teachers' expectative behaviors more than male ones (26.31 points) did, and by place of residence students in cities (27.12 points) more than those in towns and villages (26.32 points).
Second, as for students' perception on factors that cause difference in teachers' behaviors, the largest number of students perceived that the most important factor is life attitude, and next school record, intelligence, being a member of the class board, economic background, etc. In addition, the result was significantly different according to school year (χ^(2)=18.81, p=.001). That is, compared to fourth-year students, sixth-year students perceived more strongly that the factors influencing teachers' behaviors differently toward individual students are 'life attitude' and 'school record.'
Third, there was a positive correlation between students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' self-esteem (r=.44, p<.000). In particular, students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors (r=.44, p<.05) was most closely correlated with students' self-esteem, and next students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (r=.33, p<.000).
Students' perception on teachers' behaviors appeared to have a positive influence on students' self-esteem. Teachers' negative feedback had a positive influence at a degree of β=.14 (t=5.62, p=.000), and students' perception on teachers' expectative behaviors at a degree of β=.37(t=7.37, p=.000). This shows that low perception of negative feedback and high perception of expectative behaviors heighten students' self-esteem.
Fourth, there was a positive correlation between students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' academic achievement (r=.14, p<.05). In particular, students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (r=.24, p<.05) was most closely correlated with students' academic achievement, and next students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors (r=.20, p<.000) was in a statistically significant correlation with students' academic achievement.
As for the influence of students' perception on teachers' behaviors on students' academic achievement, students' perception on teachers' behaviors appeared to have a positive influence on students' academic achievement at a degree of β=.14(t=3.23, p=.001). Specifically, students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors has the greatest influence on students' academic achievement (β=.29, t=5.33, p=.000), and next students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (β=.19, t=4.28, p=.000).
Putting these results together, elementary school students' perception on teachers' behaviors works as an important factor on their self-esteem and academic achievement. The higher students perceive teachers' behaviors the stronger positive influence the perception has on students' self-esteem and academic achievement.
In addition, this study showed that students' perception on teachers' behaviors is different according to students' background factors. Thus, to improve students' self-esteem and academic achievement, it is necessary to give individual guidance to each student according to the student's personal characteristics. Students who are in a proper and desirable relationship with teachers at school may be satisfied with all the rest areas of school life. Therefore, teachers must take interest in all children and respect their personality. Furthermore, it is necessary to assign proper roles to children according to their characteristics, accept them and appreciate them positively, and make efforts to acknowledge and consider their opinions.
