竹農 徐東均 書畵 硏究 = (A) Study on painting and calligraphy of Juk-nong Seo Dong-gyun(1902-1978)

Juk-nong Seo Dong-gyun is one of artists who link the modern and the contemporary age in area of Korean traditional literary art.
In this thesis, assembled Seo dong-gyun-seo-hwa-jip (죽농 徐東均 書畵集) his life and his works matured by his inner world will be analyzed according to his chronology, and how his an old law have influence on modern art and how important position his talent has occupied in his age in the view of art history will be explained by comparing various trends in China and Korea.
Suk-Jei Seo Beong-Oh, a typical artist in modern age introduced new style of literary art to form the unique trend of Young-nam province in spite of regional handicap limited in the local area in the period of darkness. He have affected on the art life of Seo Dong-gyun, his disciple, who have succeeded in occupying his own position through essaying painting as well as calligraphy in attempt to exceed his teacher's influence. He accomplished his unique style with his own technique of calligraphy and painting by accepting merits of Chinese artists such as Jeong-Sub and Oh Chang-Suk.
Especially, he followed thoroughly the technique of drawing based on an theory agreement of paintings and writings aiming at expressing a new trend in drawing the Four Gracious Plants, and emphasized the technique of calligraphy in the strokes of the brush and balance of brush and Chinese ink focusing on balance of relative lightness or darkness in use of Chinese ink . Consequently, he attempted to take pictorial potential out of his works and accomplished balanced line-up and maturity of brush and Chinese ink by putting basis on the technique of calligraphy. In doing so, he played a leading role in establishing the trend of "Young-nam" literary art by showing significant discrepancy in aspect of Eui-Je and formality constituting the literary art style of Ho-nam area. He has became a model of virtue and human life as teacher though educating his students and analyzing his teacher. And His works have given major contribution to development and a new value creation of the world of artists as well as modern literary artists at the time when traditional literary art is disappearing. Also he is representative of his age and holds an important relationship in study of the literary art and the word of Calligraphy at that period.
This paper analyzes the life of Juk-nong Seo Dong-gyun and his works according to his handwriting, and illuminates his position in the history of painting and writing in modern and contemporary age by studying the Four Gracious Plants, vessels and branches, landscape and other literary art among his works. It is noted that untouched parts in his works, such as the Hangeul seal-engraving, the painting of nature in his paintings and soon can be research topics of student of art school.
