The purpose of this study is to clarify that Zhuang Zi's thought contents not only the equality of human beings but also equality between man and all other things and to explore its implications upon today's human-centered world view.
The foundation of Zhuang Zi's egalitarianism is nature. Nature treats all things equally, going beyond people's standard for good and evil. It is not preferential in that it sends rain and sunlight and raises all creations in the same way. What is more, nature is so dynamic that it does not continue its current relationship with a certain object perpetually. In the cycle of nature, all things in it ceaselessly change their positions, so all are equal without favoritism among them.
Based on nature, Zhuang Zi criticizes social inequality. According to his view, social inequality comes from rulers who divide the world into friends and enemies and discriminate between them, and the inequality is materialized in decorum, music and knowledge. Decorum disturbs the naturalness of human beings. It is conducted on the assumption of discrimination. Music plays the role of maintaining decorum by easing conflicts coming from the discrimination. Knowledge, combined with the body, is a weapon to oppress others in order to serve 'my' desire. Thus Zhuang Zi views knowledge in addition to decorum and music as a cause of the inequality of human beings, so as what to be abandoned.
Zhuang Zi contents the equality between man and all other creations by denying the superior position of man in the relationship between man and things in the world. According to his thought, all things in the world are made of Gi(氣) of the same quality. Because Gi of human beings is identical to that of other things, they are essentially equal. By denying the superior position of man, he also takes a negative attitude to civilization, which is the outcome of human activities. What he insists through these is that we should not see the world with a human-centered view. He argues that by changing the view of the world man can coexist peacefully with all things in the universe.
Zhuang Zi also believes that there should not be discrimination among people. Thus he made efforts to resolve inequality against the disabled and laborers, condemning discrimination against them. Zhuang Zi described the mistreated disabled and laborers as ones who were virtuous and spiritually awakened. By overstating the discriminated and disadvantaged people as superior in virtue to normal ones, he tries to dilute people's prejudice against them. For Zhuang Zi, they are essentially identical with any other human beings in that they are also precious children of nature and nurtured equally by nature. Thus he states that they should be treated equally in a way that nature treats and raises them.
What is more, Zhuang Zi's egalitarianism does not deny diversity in emphasizing 'equality.' Rather it acknowledges and guarantees individual characteristics to the maximum and by doing so strengthens the relationship among men and the relationship between man and nature. In this sense, Zhuang Zi's egalitarianism is pursuing social integration and mutual co-existence.
