The ethnic korean in China, Chosun-jok, is considered as the compatriots community that has maintained stronger sense of identity than any other ethnic Koreans around the world - They have a strong faith they are Koreans living away. In reality, on the other hand, they are virtually leading their lives as Chinese both regally and politically whose rights of independent economy, culture, language, customs and religion are guaranteed by affirmative legislations for 55 ethnic groups in China. Therefore, it might have not been easy to answer when they were asked what their identity was. A Study on the Evolution of Identity of Ethnic Korens in China.
Against this background, this thesis seeks to examine how the identity of Chosun-jok has been formed and evolved, particularly focusing on their double identity, which means two different identities in their sentiment and in reality. To answer this question, it analyses the influences of social changes in the community of Korean-Chinese after the reform and open door policy, however, massive chanes occurred in the overall Chines society including the communities of ethnic groups. As a result, The Chosun-jok now sees the foundation of their national identity shaking for following reasons:
First, the rush for the urban area after the led reform capagn is bringing their identity to a crisis to dismantle as more than 10% (or 200,000) of the population moved out of their home town that is considered as teh origin of the formation of their identity as the Korean. These trends were not expected in the past when most of their migrations occurred within their home town.
Second, the diplomatic normalization between Korea and China provided them with another opportunity to re-establish their identity. With fast growing exchanges between two countries, they experienced quite a few defferences ad discriminations and, in some senses, their image of mother country became negative.
Thirdly, Local surveys show that the different culture and customs in Korea also make it hard for them to perceive that they are Koreans. In deed, it becomes esier for them to find their own national identity in Chinese society.
Although the Chosun-jok in China still have high degree of pride in their originality as Koreans and also maintain rapport with other Korean-Chi, nese, tremendous social changes and recent exchanges with Korea had sinificant impact on their view toward the Korean peninsular, the land of their mothers. Now, their double identities existing separately in their reality and in sentiment are being unified and more and more ethnic Korean in China will have stronger perception that they are the people living in China, trying to find their single identity within the terriotory.
