The linguistic forms which teachers use in the class will be a very important model for children, and the verbal interactions between teacher and children influence not only children's linguistic development but also their cognitive development enormously. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at analyzing the types of such verbal interactions in kindergarten English classes. To this end, Kindergarten English classes were recorded to be analyzed according to Flanders' category system. Then, whether the instruction is directive or non-directive in terms of teachers' languages and whether types of interactions between teacher and children differ depending on native or Korean teacher or depending on children's English levels were determined.
As a result of the analysis, it was found that the Kindergarten English classes were dominated by teacher's questions, instructions and variable activities such singing, reading, making. Most of the classes were found to be led by teachers
As a result of analyzing teachers' languages, it was found that teachers tended not to use much non-directive languages accepting children's feeling or thoughts or praising and encouraging them. In addition, most of the questions were narrow and closed ones inducing simple answers rather than the expansive and open ones inducing diverse responses from the children. Namely, teachers tended to use directive words limiting the communications.
Native English teachers also used questions, instructions and playing activities, which were not much different from Korean teachers. However, while native teachers tended to use more diverse and detailed expressions, Korean teachers tended to use rather uniform and simple forms of languages. Nevertheless, the children spoke more voluntarily in korean teachers classes because they understood better what children wanted to say in spite of their wrong expressions.
While the classes for 5 year-old children who are beginners were dominated by singing and making, those classes for 7 year-old children who have better English were dominated by reading, dictating and textbook comprehension. In addition, teachers for 5 year-old children used some admonishing words more than directly critical ones, while teachers for 7 year-old children used instructions, orders and directly critical words more. the higher English level the children have, the more voluntary languages they used in the class. Also there were very active communication between teachers and children.
All in all, the Kindergarten English classes to which Flanders' category system were teacher-centered than children-centered, and very directive ones using few non-directive languages.
